To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health Go get a check up
How do you practice self care?

I try to book annual visits to ensure everything is working well. I try to exercise regularly and take some time to wind down every day by either reading a book or doing a crossword to put my mind at ease. Need to be better with feeding myself good foods though!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Plant an Herb Garden
Consider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?

    Fatema Adamji's avatar
    Fatema Adamji 10/23/2018 7:02 AM
A backyard garden would work for me in my current living situation but I plan to move so I might do better to plant a mobile garden - potentially in a crate?

Tried the home workout and it worked out well!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Nature Go for a Daily Walk
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

    Fatema Adamji's avatar
    Fatema Adamji 10/22/2018 10:33 AM
I am able to be more present and see smaller happenings (people interacting, animals playing, etc). I also find myself more relaxed because I am moving slower and in control of my movements more than in a car.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Choose LED Bulbs
Changing lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?

    Fatema Adamji's avatar
    Fatema Adamji 10/22/2018 10:27 AM
Take public transit, be better about throwing out trash, understand your municipality's recycling program, use less single-use items, advocate for forest and species protection, grow more plants and trees to help cycle carbon dioxide and make things look prettier!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Fatema Adamji's avatar
    Fatema Adamji 10/22/2018 10:18 AM
I have cut down on many single-use items and instead regularly use a reusable straw, a coffee tumbler, mesh bags for produce and cloth grocery bags as well as a resuable water bottle. I have also started to carry containers to restaurants in case I have takeout! I am trying to improve my usage of Kleenex as a single-use item I noticed I use quite carelessly.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?

    Fatema Adamji's avatar
    Fatema Adamji 10/22/2018 10:15 AM
I think the availability of fast food contributes to people eating more meat than in other places. This shows a lack of knowledge about the health issues this causes as well as possible inability to change? We have to make a culture shift away from a meat focused diet and make people aware of the health impacts.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

    Fatema Adamji's avatar
    Fatema Adamji 10/22/2018 10:13 AM

I could try do short home workouts in the yard or make it a friend-date to go to the gym! Gym buddies are so great!
