Hazel's actions

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

This challenge was very beneficial to me and I hope that there will be more in the future so that I can push myself in new ways.

Even though climate change is mainly being caused by big businesses and corporations, taking little steps in your own life allows you to make an impact. And if enough people make little impacts, bigger companies might notice and be encouraged to take steps of their own. Besides, doing something, no matter how small, is better than doing nothing.

I love how educational this challenge is. It allows you to find more ways to live a more Earth friendly lifestyle in ways that are actually very impactful.

    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

Thrift new clothes and fix ones with minor problems. Learn how to sew/mend, which will save you money and will be beneficial to the planet.

    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?

Always carry at least one reusable bag. You never know when you might need one for something. If you can't get a bag that you can reuse, opt for paper or go without if possible. Also most disposable bags can be recycled if you absolutely have to get one.

The most prominent sustainability issue where I live is keeping the Great Lakes clean. This is an important water source and it needs to be preserved for future generations.

This challenge is making me more aware of the small steps I can take as an individual for a more eco lifestyle

    Health More Fruits and Veggies
What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How can we start shifting from a meat-focused food culture to a more plant-based one?

Meat is seen as the "norm". Most people don't have good access to healthy alternative such as a variety of vegetables and fruits. To start a shift, we need to educate people on meat-free meals and ways that it would be beneficial to them monetarily and nutritiously.
