Michele's actions

Energy

Use an Energy Meter

I will use an energy meter to monitor my energy use and identify opportunities to save power.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Personal Waste Audit

I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 19
DAILY ACTIONS

Water

Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants

I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of plants and trees at my home or work.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food

Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty

I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

COMPLETED 19
DAILY ACTIONS

Energy

Choose LED Bulbs

I will replace 6 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health

Exercise Daily

Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 30 minute(s) each day.

COMPLETED 18
DAILY ACTIONS

Energy

Online Energy Audit

I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Use Reusable Bags

I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.

COMPLETED 19

    Energy Use an Energy Meter
How can you make your home more energy efficient?

Questioning the accuracy of my new 'smart meter' with the readings I got on the kill-a-watt meter. Time to chase down the missing energy sinks... if there is one...
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Online Energy Audit
What most interested or surprised you about your own energy footprint?

    Michele Barbin's avatar
    Michele Barbin 10/22/2018 12:39 PM
Not a lot... just the fact that I turned off cable, unplugged all entertainment from last year, yet am somehow using more energy after the smart meter was added to my house. Weirdness.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Choose LED Bulbs
Changing lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?

Self-Challenge: Live completely on your own garden and food sources within your neighborhood. If you can't walk or bike to the original source (not the store, they ship food in!), then don't eat it. Sound extreme? Think it through. If you live in suburbia, it's not difficult. If you produce more fresh vegetables than you can use, share with neighbors or a food pantry (fresh is best) or learn to freeze and can for winter.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Personal Waste Audit
Why is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?

Humans are a self-centered lot and taught behaviors by those around us. It has taken a long time to develop the awareness needed to be a more conscious citizen and make informed choices to be less of a consumer and more a borrower of the planet's resources.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?

I leave reusable bags in my car, but frequently forget them when I enter a store. Set the cart aside and walk back to your car. Great exercise, and a reminder to remember the bag next time!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Straws: Useless
Coffee cups? Buy a stainless one and carry it with you. Refills usually cost less!
Carry your own reusable bags or reuse the ones already carried home if you need one. Many times, when I'm just picking up one or two things, I refuse a bag and carry the items out in hand.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Where are your nearest natural bodies of water? How might they be affected by runoff?

    Michele Barbin's avatar

Avoid piling mulch at the base of a tree's trunk. It's not healthy for most trees. Give it a couple inches of breathing space. In fall, when I bag grass and leaves, I mulch my garden bed, trees and shrubs for winter. If only I could allow my grass to become "meadow over manicure," I would be a happier homeowner!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

    Michele Barbin's avatar
    Michele Barbin 10/22/2018 6:18 AM
Don't accept, deliberate. I realized the only reason I use straws is because they are placed in front of me. Being aware of this passive habit made it EASY to eliminate.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

    Michele Barbin's avatar
    Michele Barbin 10/22/2018 6:16 AM
Go on a hike with friends, but with me, I prefer exercise time as solitude time.
