Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Energy

I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Power Down the ComputerWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Monica Bower-List 10/19/2018 10:32 AMTurning off lights, making my children aware of the impact on the environment and having them turn off lights, putting on sweatshirts when cold, and unplugging from the wall when we aren't charging tablets/phones, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Go get a check upHow do you practice self care?
Monica Bower-List 10/18/2018 5:01 AMSelf care is a total experience. I check into my faith daily, walk for the physical aspect, practice saying nice things about myself, and try to unwind with my family. I usually do this in small increments and spread it out through the day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Monica Bower-List 10/12/2018 5:52 AMI have gotten really into reusable, but straws are still my biggest use item. I do not like to use the metal ones, so I recently found a metal one with plastic ends, may have to try that. I have been using coffee mugs from Copco band and I love the mouth shape on them, they never surprise burn me. :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Monica Bower-List 10/11/2018 7:34 AMI enjoy my nightly walk with my loved ones. My gorgeous partner and beautiful kids get to walk with me and we are able to then connect through communication. -
Monica Bower-List 10/11/2018 7:29 AMHow has everyone been doing? Have your goals been maintainable? -
Monica Bower-List 10/09/2018 1:23 PMHello All,
I find it easiest to do my meatless meal in the morning, thank goodness for bagels! Also, ditching the straw was weird at first, but I am finding that I am getting used to it.
Good luck Team. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Monica Bower-List 10/04/2018 4:22 AM
Meat has had the biggest impact on our environment. By reducing the amount of meat you consume, you are reducing the amt of animals farmed that have a huge impact on the environment. I believe Americans were raised believing you have to eat meat to obtain your protein needs, many do not know that other sources of proteins such as bean, legumes, and quinoa are also good sources of protein.
