this has helped me a lot to be aware of the little things that can make a big difference.  I have even gone on walks to places that I have never been before and were beautiful.

    Water Ditch the Lawn
What is the main water source in your region?

I signed up for the Backyard Habitat certification to help wildlife and also conserve water.  As part of this I have been methodically getting rid of grass in my yard.  I am now silver certify and I am working my way to the next level.  As part of that I will be removing  more lawn from my yard and planting natives which will not require watering.  I already don't water my lawn at all regardless, but having mulch and different canopy levels will help  retain whatever water is there due to winter rain.

What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I have switched my coffee cups for my metal insulated cup and for cold drinks I use the same tumbler I had for the last 3 years.  I am looking for an alternative to replace that when it breaks with a more environmentally friendly option.  I also refuse straws and use a reusable one.
At the grocery store I have learned that if I forget my reusable bag and I carry stuff in my arms, I am more likely to remember it next time... making myself uncomfortable seems to help with this!

    Water Fix Leaky Faucets
Fixing leaky faucets is one of the tasks that we can easily put off until later. Good job on completing this action! How will you use the momentum from completing this action to increase your water efficiency?

I did a check of all my faucets yesterday at home and found one that was leaking and we fixed it.  Along those lines,  I realized that we can now disconnect half of them and change our drip system to come on only when it has not rained for a few days instead of leaving it on even when it rains.

How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?

When I spend time outdoor, even if it is in my garden amongst trees and birds, I feel part of all that is around me... I feel that I am recharging and helps me see the world different, with a more positive light.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?

I have a lot of reusable bags but the trick is always to remember to bring them with me in the store.  I started to be aware of it and if I still forget, to make a point of going back outside and getting the bag, even if that means having to go back in line.  Having to do that, makes it easier to remember to bring it in with me.

I am very excited to participate in the challenge... my husband and I are advocate of the environment and we have made changes to align our words with our actions.  We still have a ways to go, but we will keep going.  We can all collectively make a huge difference if we all just take 1 step and make it part of our lifestyle.
