Michelle's actions
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Community
Connect with a Nonprofit
I will connect with a local nonprofit, environmental or otherwise, and find out how I can get involved or become a member.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 5 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Health
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend at least 10 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.
Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 23 hour(s) in my community during the challenge.
Nature
Practice Gratitude for Earth
I will spend 10 minute(s) each day outside, practicing gratitude (prayer, meditation, journaling, etc.) for Earth and the nature surrounding me.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.
Waste
Recycle Everything I Can
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 5 minutes researching and recycling all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Michelle Chavez 10/15/2018 12:28 PMPlastic bags! I can reduce their use by replacing them for reusable ones. I still use some plastic bags to throw away the trash that can not be recycled. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Support Pollution ReductionWhat environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?
Michelle Chavez 10/14/2018 2:51 PMPollution, specially in big cities as Guadalajara , sometimes the sky is not clean and it looks like a big grey cloud. People is not breathing clean air and it affects our health little by little. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Volunteer in my CommunityWhat is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?
Michelle Chavez 10/14/2018 2:48 PMCleaning the streets in my community, collect trash, separate it and recycle as I do in home. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Michelle Chavez 10/10/2018 11:35 AMI mostly use my mug to drink coffee, I do not use the dispensable straw to stir. I always carry my reusable bottle of water and when I go to restaurants I ask for a glass of water. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Michelle Chavez 10/10/2018 11:33 AMYes, this surprises me.. when we see all food waste as money we give ourselves an idea of the negative impact we have. We can feed lots of people with all that waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Recycle Everything I CanWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Michelle Chavez 10/10/2018 10:38 AMI have learned that there are many recycling programs in my country but most people do not know about them. My roommates and I recycle everything we can at home but sometimes is difficult because our recycling company does not accept everything.. they do not accept plastic bags or straws just specific recipients. I try to separate trash and recycle at work most of the time.. I think is not just recycling is not generate the trash at all starting for all packages we buy from grocery store. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Practice Gratitude for EarthKathleen Dean Moore says that a sense of gratitude leads to a sense of moral obligation. Do you agree? How do we cultivate a sense of gratitude as individuals, and as a society?
Michelle Chavez 10/10/2018 10:34 AMI agree, we should always be grateful for everything we have, when adopt the habit we find more and more things to be thankful and we live happier!
There are many things that were given to us for FREE.
