Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

This has certainly been a fun and eye-opening event.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

I have chosen the straw for this challenge, But I think to-go containers and drink packaging is really a larger volume for me.  I shall make a conscious effort to reduce these items.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

Metal cups don't make it through the metal detector, Plastic re-usables don't hold the heat as efficiently.  The best choice for a slow drinker like me is the metal cup.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?

The local water has a significant amount of calcium carbonate and other impurities.  I will investigate filtering methods to eliminate the particulate.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Adjust the Thermostat
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your zipcode, and in your state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

My energy usage is lower than others in my zipcode.  This weekend, I shall investigate the power usage of Bluetooth capable devices to try to further reduce the usage.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Turn it off
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

Utah Plunder and Loot uses coal fired and natural gas production.  Bonneville power uses Hydro-electric.  All forms of generation have pros and cons.  Of the forms used in this area, Hydro would provide the least impact to the environment and the impact is local.  Carbon based fuel generation (I loathe the term fossil fuel) provides a local and global impact.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Go Paperless
Reducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?

I have been contemplating, to-go containers and the boxes I ask for to take home food I haven't finished.  I am probably order to-go meals twice a week, by taking the time to eat the meal on-site, I will save a considerable amount of waste.  Also, I am thinking about putting some storage containers in my backpack.  The boxes the restaurants give you to pack home left-overs often leak and are often one use poly.  I'm not really sure how this will work, more to come.

With the fall colors coming on, don't forget to check your weather stripping around doors and windows.

The new stripping is sitting in front of my front door so that I have to step over it to get in and out. That's the good news. The bad news is it's been there for 3 or 4 days now......

To help with the straw issue, I bought a reusable glass with a twist on lid and straw.  I keep the straw in the car.
