Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 25 minute(s) each day.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste

I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Advocate for More Food OptionsGiven the impact of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers on both the natural world and our food systems, what do you think about the use of these products in agriculture?
Jim D'Arcy 10/23/2018 5:44 AMI think the real challenge is in what we are willing to pay for food. Pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers are all meant to increase production and gains in quantity. The negatives though have a huge impact on society and in particular, our health care system. Yet government typically under funds both the production and impact sides. Hopefully, generations of the future will solve this issue. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?
-
Jim D'Arcy 10/10/2018 4:47 AMThis challenge has been a good learning experience so far. After a week, I have been more focused on recycling, energy consumption, and more eco friendly purchases. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Jim D'Arcy 10/04/2018 4:46 AMIf you focus on what you are grateful for, it seems to help with the challenges that are thrown your way. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Jim D'Arcy 10/04/2018 4:45 AMWalking outdoors in a good way of incorporating nature into exercise. Walking with folks at work is also a great way to get to know them better. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Jim D'Arcy 10/02/2018 12:16 PMI am a big offender of prepackaged single serve items in the store (salads, fruit, etc.). I will look at making my own salads and using reusable containers. I can do the same with fruit. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?
Jim D'Arcy 10/02/2018 12:12 PMThe stores I shop in always have reusable bags for purchase. If I find myself in a situation where I need a bag, I will purchase a reusable bag if I am not able to carry the items out in my hands.
