If no one cared about where they threw their trash, and garbage piled up, our community and personal health would both be at great risk of becoming as sad and messy as our environmental health.
JT Davis
"I believe in supporting increased sustainability by thinking globally and acting locally; as local as within one's self, for it must start with each of us being willing to make adjustments to our behavior and ways of thinking to preserve our Earth."

JT's actions
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper each day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided.
Waste
Launch a Recycling Program
I will start a recycling program at my workplace or school. If a recycling program exists, I will advocate for ways to improve and expand it.
Health
Take Control
Both system and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by opting into paperless billing and ending unwanted subscriptions.
Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 4 hour(s) in my community during the challenge.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Food
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of C02 over the course of the next year.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

JT Davis 10/23/2018 5:58 PMLooking great, team! Thank you!
One more day to go.
Please consider any tasks you might have done recently that you could log for points. Also, the reflection questions are very informal and easy, and they earn you a quick 15 points! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Take ControlHow do environmental health, community health, and your personal health intersect?
JT Davis 10/23/2018 5:56 PMHere's one extreme example:
If no one cared about where they threw their trash, and garbage piled up, our community and personal health would both be at great risk of becoming as sad and messy as our environmental health. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

JT Davis 10/12/2018 5:42 PMA dear friend of mine who is down on his luck and homeless has made a temporary home under a secluded bridge in the suburbs. Keeping the area tidy has been the least of his worries, and so we spent a good hour restoring it yesterday to a more Earth friendly state. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Go get a check upHow do you practice self care?
JT Davis 10/12/2018 5:38 PMPoorly, to be honest. I know I need to eat better, exercise more, and reprioritize my free time to include the important things I want to add in there. This Eco Challenge sure is helping with encouraging that! I've just made an appointment for a full physical and discussion about self care next week. -
JT Davis 10/11/2018 4:22 PMIf you live near the Hillsboro area and you have thin plastics to recycle (such as the wrapping from bulk paper products, plastic shopping bags, etc), you can take them to Far West Recycling located at: 6440 SE Alexander St, Hillsboro, OR 97123. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Try a New Way to PrepCanning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?
JT Davis 10/11/2018 4:21 PMThis year my wife, daughter, and I hope to start canning jellies and jams. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Volunteer in my CommunityWhat is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?
JT Davis 10/10/2018 4:42 PMI think it's helpful to encourage the limiting of waste by minimizing utility bills. For example, some simple ways to be considerate are to only run water when necessary during tooth brushing, showering, and washing dishes.

JT Davis 10/10/2018 4:38 PMWhen I challenged myself to do just 4 hours of community service during this event I thought it would be no sweat. Then I set out to sign up for volunteer events, and although I did secure some for after the Eco Challenge, I wasn't able to find anything on the volunteer site that was at the right day/time during this month. Then I remembered the simple things I volunteer for all the time! I spent 3 hours volunteering last Sunday training a new member of our tech team at church, and then today I volunteered for one hour maintaining the worm bin our site has for the purpose of eliminating the need to throw away greasy pizza boxes. That's 4 hours. Good to go!
