Jon's actions

Water

Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

DAILY ACTIONS

Water

Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants

I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of plants and trees at my home or work.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Ditch the Lawn

I will replace my lawn with a drought-tolerant landscape and save the water, money, and time I used to spend cutting the grass.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.

Rock Creek and Bethany Lake... both are very  vulnerable to residential runoff that would affect green space and wildlife.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

    Bull Run Watershed I believe
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water 5-Minute Showers
Five minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?

My other big gap is dishwashing... we use our dish washer for some things but hand wash for cooking utensils and cookware.  I am on the alert for times I can turn the water off while washing and then turn it back on to rinse... I know that would save a lot of water each day.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

Vegetable bags and plastic bags... we try to re-use them as cat litter and bathroom garbage bags... but they are still going to the landfill.  I do skip them when shopping as much as possible - I either just carry everything or remember my reusable totes that I carry in the car.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

My biggest challenge on this right now is the Starbucks App... I really like the convenience of being able to order while at my desk and then having my coffee/macchiato be ready by the time I get across the street... it saves time and sometimes it is good that I don't have to try to speak my order out loud... but I can't use my own mug when I do that... This month I will stop using the app to order for sure and see how it goes.
