  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Needs Vs. Wants
How is creativity necessary for practicing simplicity?

The easiest way is not always the best way.  Halloween is a perfect example.  Your child wants to be a superhero and wants the costume from the cataloge .  With a little bit of creativity, you can pull items from your closet, buy a few inexpensive items at the dollar store, and make an amazing superhero that your child can help create and will be a unique and undoubtedly a better costume then you would have bought.  You've saved yourself money, avoided purchasing a disposable garment, and returned simplicity to the household
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Adjust the Thermostat
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your zipcode, and in your state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

I keep my A/C at a steady 80 degrees  so there is less adjusting, keep blinds down during the day while I'm working to insulate, turn off the computer when away, do laundry only with full loads, and use the oven sparingly.

What would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?

I am trying to invest more time in what I'm thankful for.  That can be the little things like the smell of freshly cut grass or the big things like my sister being one year post cancer.  Everyday there is something wonderful that happens if we just take the time to stop and think.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?

the biggest barrier to using water bottles is the availability of fountains to refill them when you are out.  When traveling overseas, there are plentiful fountains in the community  to refill consumers personal water bottles.   The water is always fresh and cold, so there is no need to purchase water bottles. (In fact, there are very few sold in other countries)  We need to be more proactive in doing the same in our own country

Skipping the straw has been the easiest challenge, I started doing this several months ago and still enjoy my beverages just as much!

I volunteer my time and resources to North Florida Land Trust.  A area non-profit, their mission is to preserve our land for future generations. They do this through land donation, acquisition and other strategies. Growing up, my parents always planted at least one tree every year to give back to the environment, I believe i am continuing their mission in my own way
