Maria's actions
Nature
Forage for My Food
I will use the 'Learn More' resources below to find where I can forage for my own food locally.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 5 minute(s) each day.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Health
Avoid refined sugar
I will adopt a diet free of refined sugars, which eliminates sweetened beverages, candy, and processed foods.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 1 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Forage for My FoodAmongst the motivations for foraging are: a source of food; means of income; connecting with nature; cultural tradition; or transmitting "local ecological knowledge, and a means for stewarding local and native plant populations" (McLain et al. 2012, 13). Which of these would be your chief motivation and why?
Maria Elsom 10/10/2018 1:34 PMI've never really thought about foraging for food within Regina. On the farm my mom would always take us to pick chokecherries where some bushes were growing wild. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Maria Elsom 10/04/2018 7:55 AMBeing more aware of the packaging on items I buy is a focus for me. If a product is overly packaged I will avoid it, even if it's cheaper. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth More Fruits and VeggiesWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How can we start shifting from a meat-focused food culture to a more plant-based one?
Maria Elsom 10/04/2018 7:54 AMI am making more of an effort to eat more vegetables, and instead of eating just a banana every day, I am trying to eat more of a variety of fruits. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Avoid refined sugarBefore you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?
Maria Elsom 10/04/2018 7:52 AMI don't think I'm addicted to sugar, but most people don't realize how much sugar is in the foods they eat. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Adjust the ThermostatYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your zipcode, and in your state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Maria Elsom 10/04/2018 7:51 AMWe have tried reducing our home temperature and have not noticed a huge difference even in this snowy weather -
Maria Elsom 10/04/2018 7:49 AMI ate my vegetables. Lots of beets!! -
Maria Elsom 10/03/2018 8:13 AMI forgot to eat more vegetables yesterday....
