Mia 's actions
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Waste
Visit a Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 30 minutes visiting a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about the waste stream.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of C02 over the course of the next year.
Water
Insulate Water Pipes and Water Heater
I will avoid wasting water while waiting for the shower or sink to heat up.
Health
Eliminate Toxic Plastics
I will avoid buying toxic plastics - including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl - and instead replace them with bioplastic or durable options.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 60 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Energy
Upgrade My Windows
I will upgrade the windows or weatherstripping in my home or office to reduce air leaks and save on energy costs.
Waste
Launch a Recycling Program
I will start a recycling program at my workplace or school. If a recycling program exists, I will advocate for ways to improve and expand it.
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or some other small improvement.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will spend at least 60 minutes finding out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in my curbside bin.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by opting into paperless billing and ending unwanted subscriptions.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Upgrade My WindowsHow does improving your home's energy efficiency help you better live out your values?
Mia Falconer 10/24/2018 10:35 AMIt's cost effective to improve the windows. We had leaks that caused drafts in the house, so we put window plastic and tape so that we are not losing heat to those leaks.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Mia Falconer 10/18/2018 7:51 PMPlastic cups from my ice chewing addiction are single use, however, I use them over and over. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Improve a Bus StopHow can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?
Mia Falconer 10/18/2018 7:48 PMTransportation companies can invest in a fleet of "blue" vehicles that are better for the environment and more fuel efficient .

Mia Falconer 10/08/2018 10:13 AMI asked my favorite coffee shop if they had reusable or stainless steel straws, the answer was "sadly no". I explained that I am participating in the ECO CHALLENGE, so I didn't need a straw any longer. -
