    Community Join my Neighborhood Association

through neighborhood associations, everyone has more access to a network, more opportunities to share information (receive information and express opinions on problems that matter to us), and thus it helps with more inclusive decision making.

Already the end of the challenge! I have started so many improvement projects and getting more involved in the community! let's all keep up the hard work!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Choose LED Bulbs
Changing lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?

    Johanna Ficatier's avatar
    Johanna Ficatier 10/24/2018 8:42 AM
I think the least effort / biggest impact we can do to lower carbon emissions is to adjust the thermostat! Wear sweater in the house in winter, accept to be a little (reasonably) warm in summer... I do that in my house, but I wish businesses would do that as well. I often feel too cold inside stores / restaurants in summer, and too hot in winter...
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Volunteer in my Community
What is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?

    Johanna Ficatier's avatar
    Johanna Ficatier 10/24/2018 8:33 AM
I think interactions between residents is key to create a sustainable community, as it increases our sense of safety and openness. Bringing people together through volunteer activities is a great start, as it helps connect people with different background and lifestyle.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water Fix Leaky Faucets
Fixing leaky faucets is one of the tasks that we can easily put off until later. Good job on completing this action! How will you use the momentum from completing this action to increase your water efficiency?

    Johanna Ficatier's avatar
    Johanna Ficatier 10/22/2018 7:25 AM
next steps would be changing all faucets, toilets, and then appliances (washer, dishwasher...) to energy efficient ones
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water Install a Low-Flow Showerhead
How can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?

    Johanna Ficatier's avatar
    Johanna Ficatier 10/22/2018 7:20 AM
I think that diversification of water supply sources as well as more sharing would enable us to be more water resilient.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What comes around goes around... I think we are all facing some times in our life when we need help, so I think it's just normal to provide help to other in needs and overall make the world a better place

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Drive Less
How has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?

    Johanna Ficatier's avatar
    Johanna Ficatier 10/18/2018 6:29 AM
growing up in Europe where we have a lot of public transportation options (bus, train, etc.) made me realize that driving is not the most environment friendly mode of transportation. That being said, I still use my car, but try to minimize its use by combining trips, carpooling, etc.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Support Native Communities
Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

    Johanna Ficatier's avatar
    Johanna Ficatier 10/17/2018 6:59 AM
We depend heavily on natural resources to live, but we need to understand that those resources exist in limited quantities and we should not use more than we need. For example in our society we waste a lot of food, whereas the indigenous only kill / harvest when necessary and make the most out of what they kill / harvest.
