REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Whole Foods DietMichael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?
Heather Fisher Wallin 10/24/2018 9:36 AMThis is such a true statement. If I don't take care of myself with healthy food and exercise, I feel terrible and eventually it leads to doctor's visit to try and feel well again. Prevention is key.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Meet My Local FarmersWhen you know who produces your food, you are connecting personally to your complex regional food system. What are the advantages of knowing who produces your food and where it comes from? Do you think this might enable someone to advocate for a better quality of life for those who produce their food, both near and far?
Heather Fisher Wallin 10/22/2018 12:49 PMI have yet to do it, but I have a goal of connecting with a local farmer to get local, grass-fed beef and pork. I worry about the overuse of antibiotics, the feeding of grain, and the way the animals are treated. I would be healthier if I purchased local, healthier meat, but it is easier to just get it when I am already at the grocery store for other things. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Volunteer in my CommunityWhat is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?
Heather Fisher Wallin 10/19/2018 2:18 PMNow that my kids are getting older, I need to commit more of my time giving back to the community. I am volunteering at my kids' Oktoberfest event at their school tonight. Tomorrow, all three of us are volunteering at the Enchanted Forest for Wiscorps. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Plant an Herb GardenConsider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?
Heather Fisher Wallin 10/19/2018 2:13 PMI hope to have started some micro-greens by the end of this challenge. This reminds me of alfalfa sprouts I grew in the past. The sprouts just needed water and I used a mason jar. The space these take is so minimal that it can be done on a kitchen counter. The micro-greens do use some soil, but can be done in a small container. -
Heather Fisher Wallin 10/15/2018 6:52 AMI haven't done the biometric testing offered through work in the past, but because of this challenge I decided to have it done. It's a good starting point on how to improve over all health. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Heather Fisher Wallin 10/11/2018 6:42 AMGetting enough sleep is very hard. I want to maximize the amount of things I can get done in a day and the evenings is when I have time to do things. I do have a set time that I try to be in bed by, but need to limit the distractions of my phone, books, and watching movies to fall asleep at a decent time. I've noticed the harder I work on getting to sleep at a decent time, my daughter follows suit and also gets to bed earlier. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?
Heather Fisher Wallin 10/08/2018 7:45 AMI had gotten into a good habit of having my reusable bags with when grocery shopping, but I still need to make a habit of doing this at other stores. If just a few items, I remember to skip the bag. Going through the self-check out I automatically put things in the disposable bags and before I know it, I am out the door with them and regretting that I did not make my challenge for the day. -
Heather Fisher Wallin 10/05/2018 8:17 AMI have been eating mostly whole foods for almost six weeks as part of a weight-loss challenge. I have been getting good results with weight loss, have better digestive health, and feel great about my cart full of good food at the grocery store. I thought I would just eat this way for the challenge (no dairy, grains or sugar), but I plan to stick with it, for the most part. I just can't give up pizza forever, but I can limit it :) -
Heather Fisher Wallin 10/04/2018 8:52 AMI have incorporated many eco actions throughout the years, but there are always so many more things to improve upon. Hopefully this challenge will inspire me to grow an indoor herb garden again and start buying local beef and pork.
