I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

    Community Support Native Communities
Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

Most ecosystems fluctuate within a range of tolerances where higher levels of one resource or force push balancing levels in other areas. When a new factor or force is introduced, it can take awhile for the system to achieve it's new balance.  Making wise choices about consumption helps preserve that balance instead of using up resources that become unavailable.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Nature Go for a Daily Walk
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

I take more time to notice the sights, sounds, and smells.  Yesterday I smelled the fall leaves and listened to them crunch under my feet.

    Nature Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?

When I spend time walking outside I feel a greater sense of ownership in my community.  Instead of just living here in Omaha, it becomes my city and I want my behaviors to reflect that I am taking the best care of my community.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

I'm switching my family over to cloth napkins and kitchen towels to replace disposable paper towels. I purchase most of my clothing from second hand stores, gives my wardrobe a boost and keeps unwanted clothing out of landfills.

What environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?

Air, soil, and water quality are affected by agricultural activities in our region. Animal waste, pesticides, and herbicides can leach into local water sources.

My volunteer time was spent with a group of people cleaning up a landscape area of a local school. We cleared out dead vegetation to make room for new live growth.  More clean oxygen for everyone!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Buy From a Farmers Market
What is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?

Eliminating soda from my diet would be an excellent choice - not just for me (making healthier choice to drink water, tea, etc from a refillable container) but also the reduction in plastic waste as I wouldn't have the single use container with every soda purchase.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?

When I worked retail I always thought it was weird when people said "no bag please". But after choosing to be more conscious about my disposable product usage, I have been the one saying "no bag please" or "here're my reusable bags, thanks for using them".
