Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

I think the hardest part of my challenge hasn't been the straws or the remembering to turn off the lights. It's been writing my gratitudes of the day. I get so wrapped up in what I'm doing and making sure I get x, y, z done that I forget to be grateful for the ability to even do those things. Having this as part of my daily challenge has made me realize how lucky I am.

Fresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?

Taking a walk each day gives me a change to enjoy nature and clear my head as well as get me moving after a long day at work. It's also a great stress reliever!

Sometimes I get caught up in the day to day stress of life and I forget to think about what I'm grateful for. Taking the extra time at the end of my day to think about what I'm thankful for makes me appreciate the small things in life that make it so much brighter

What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

coffee cups, straws, and plastic bags are my biggest single-use items that I come across. I already use a thermos when I'm at work, but I see a lot of people using disposable cups. Straws are my biggest nemesis! I use them to drink and to stir my drinks. The best substitute for me could be a spoon or a reusable straw. For plastic bags I've started replacing them with reusable containers or bees wrap (Bees Wrap is the best!!!)

How do you practice self care?

I like to take a few minutes of my day to practice self-care in whatever way I need at the time. Whether it's taking the time to read a book or take a walk. My most favorite form of self-care is yoga. It clears my mind and gets me moving!

How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

This is never a question I've thought about before. I would love to investigate further into how it's generated in my neighborhood and how that would impact the environment where I live.
