  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health More Fruits and Veggies
What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How can we start shifting from a meat-focused food culture to a more plant-based one?

I think there are many factors that contribute to people in North America eating a lot of meat including US history of cowboys, ranching and available land for cattle; fast-food/instant gratification culture and the fact that meat generally has more calories by weight than vegetables/fruits so takes less time to eat to get the same amount of calories;and meat industry advertising and advocacy.  Shifting from a meat-focused food culture to a more plant-based one involves educating about the health risks and environmental costs of meat consumption and for stores and restaurants to increase the healthy plant-based options on their menus.
