Shameika's actions
Energy
Heat and Cool Naturally
I will naturally heat and cool my house, office, or dorm room by opening or closing my windows, curtains, and blinds, and by using fans.
Community
Connect with a Nonprofit
I will connect with a local nonprofit, environmental or otherwise, and find out how I can get involved or become a member.
Energy
Online Energy Audit
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Food
Smart Seafood Choices
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Food
Whole Foods Diet
I will enjoy 2 meal(s) each day free of processed foods.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Shameika Hanson 10/17/2018 9:42 AMI don't eat more than the guidelines suggest especially after learning about everything in the water and how our marine life is being effected by things like pollution and microplastics. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Online Energy AuditWhat most interested or surprised you about your own energy footprint?
Shameika Hanson 10/17/2018 9:41 AMThere is a lot of ghost energy being used because certain appliances are always plugged in. I was happy that I used a lot less energy than I thought but have identified ways to reduce that use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Heat and Cool NaturallyWhat are other ways you could use the power of the sun to reduce your own environmental footprint?
Shameika Hanson 10/17/2018 9:40 AMUse it to dry my clothes, hair (sun + wind) and car after they are washed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Connect with a NonprofitWhat inspires you to act toward a more sustainable community?
Shameika Hanson 10/17/2018 9:39 AMKnowing that work has to be done in a collaborative matter to be effective and long lasting a sustainable community ensures that is happening and will continue to happen. -
Shameika Hanson 10/17/2018 9:33 AMToday I am grateful for:
1. My job
2. My home
3. A vehicle to transport myself on my own time -
Shameika Hanson 10/17/2018 9:31 AMAll meals today and yesterday have been unprocessed and eating leftovers has decreased my trash and amount spent out of my daily allotted food budget. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Whole Foods DietMichael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?
Shameika Hanson 10/16/2018 9:33 AMFood can heal us. What we ingest is what our bodies use to keep us at our best. You can't get the best outcome if the inputs aren't good. Eating unhealthy food will surely lead one to the doctor way more often than if a person were to ensure they were healthy to begin with. Paying the grocer/ farmer is a way to stay healthy instead of paying the doctor to get healthy. -
Shameika Hanson 10/16/2018 9:30 AM1. Grateful for loving family
2. Waking up this morning in good health
3. Having support systems in my life that allow me to take on new challenges and explore the better parts of myself
