Dawn's actions
Waste
Visit a Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 50 minutes visiting a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about the waste stream.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Transportation
Go by Bike
I will commute by bike 3 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to 3.41 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Community
Express My Support
I will find out who in my state makes decisions that impact the environment and express my support for more environmental actions.
Community
Talk To My Friends and Colleagues
I will research the social or environmental issues in my community that matter to me and tell 1 friends and/or colleagues each day about what I learn.
Simplicity
Track my Purchases
I will spend 3 minutes each day maintaining a record of all my purchases and learning about my spending habits.
Participant Feed

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Express My SupportWhat sustainability issues are most pressing or prominent where you live?
Dawn Hartley 10/24/2018 12:32 PMIt's hard to say what the most pressing issue is, but the one that effects me the most right now is an unsustainable growth in traffic volume. It wasn't obvious how to write about this to a public official, because I know most were hoping the recent transit bill would win public support, but it did not. So I decided the best thing to do would be to write to a couple of offices about my specific experiences. I also learned there is a commuter challenge happening here in Nashville this week, so I signed up for that. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go by BikeHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Dawn Hartley 10/22/2018 6:48 PMI still have not ridden the bus! I've checked the schedule a couple of times but it didn't seem feasible to get where I needed to go. I have had some stressful driving experiences during the challenge, trying to get downtown to work in the evening. I live very close but there are so many cars packed in on some nights that I can really get stuck. It is always better when I'm in a carpool so we can figure things out together, and it's also nice to socialize on the way. I have not been able to bike as much as I hoped, but it sure does feel good when I do. I feel stronger and healthier and more free when I am on a bicycle than when I am in a car. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Talk To My Friends and ColleaguesWhat makes you feel connected to your neighborhood, your neighbors, or another kind of community in your life?
Dawn Hartley 10/22/2018 6:42 PMFinding out about the things that really matter to people. Being able to offer help and encouragement. Seeing a progression in the life of the community and being able to remember how it got started. -
Dawn Hartley 10/22/2018 6:37 AMAlso, if you are not coming but have an idea about any of the questions below, let me know.-
Dawn Hartley 10/22/2018 6:27 PMLet's talk about it. -
Jami Anderson 10/22/2018 3:39 PMThis is only tangentially related but I've been thinking about recycling at the church. I have some ideas about the bulletin, communion cups, the fellowship meal and sunday coffee and donuts.

Dawn Hartley 10/22/2018 6:36 AMI realize this is very last minute. Tonight there is a meeting of TIPL (Tennessee Interfaith Power and Light) at 6:30 at Holy Name Catholic Church here in East Nashville. Eastwood is a member organization, but has not really been very active. Would anyone like to go with me? Here is the agenda for this evening.
The focus of the meeting will be strategizing/setting goals for 2019.-- What unique opportunities do we have here in Nashville to contribute to the global movement to combat climate change?-- What special role can the Nashville interfaith community play in that work?-- What will be happening in 2019 that we may want to tie into? Those will be the types of questions we will be thinking about together at this meeting.

Dawn Hartley 10/19/2018 12:44 PMI'm getting outside just about as much as I possibly can this week, walking and riding my bike instead of driving on short trips, and "playing in the dirt" around the church grounds. I've moved a few plants around--they are often very forgiving of a novice gardener. I keep seeing more spaces that could be naturalized. Little by little:-) If anyone has suggestions or wants to talk about things that might work on the grounds, please feel free!-
Dawn Hartley 10/22/2018 6:15 AMSounds good! We have lavender and stevia in the herb garden. Are those useful in teas? I'd love to learn more about making tea! And I like the idea of adding lemon balm and mint. -
Jami Anderson 10/21/2018 6:47 PMI think it would be cool to have a patch of lemon balm and mint somewhere to pick from to make tea for the fellowship meals. Cheap, good and caffeine free.

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Track my PurchasesWhat have you noticed about your purchases? Where are you inclined to make shifts, if any?
Dawn Hartley 10/17/2018 7:19 PMHealth care is our biggest expenditure. Food is a distant second. I'm not sure I completely realized that. I don't really think there is anything to do about it. All of our other expenses are much less. After keeping track for a couple of weeks, I feel okay about the amount of discretionary purchases I make. I am reminded once again what a burden health care costs must be for many people who are in lower income brackets and have chronic health conditions.-
Roberta Gallagher 10/19/2018 2:28 PMYou are so right about the burden of healthcare costs. Prior to the ACA, the majority of bankruptcies in the U.S. resulted from overwhelming medical expenses, and cost is still an obstacle for many. This website has a lot of information and resources on accessing affordable health care: <https://familiesusa.org/>

Dawn Hartley 10/15/2018 11:06 AMAlso, great news! Our lowest water usage ever in the parsonage. Just wait til next month! Woohoo! -
Dawn Hartley 10/15/2018 11:04 AMWhen I visited the recycling center, one of the first things emphasized was the order of the three Rs--first, reduce, then reuse, then recycle. I'm sometimes at a bit of a loss on the reuse part. Roberta's post included some ideas for reusing medication bottles. Who else has creative reuse ideas? Post a picture if you want!-
Jami Anderson 10/16/2018 5:28 AMI’ll post some of these!

Roberta Gallagher 10/13/2018 1:30 PMThanks for posting these beautiful pictures, and thanks to you and Kristina for creating and maintaining the garden! I notice it with pleasure every time I enter/exit the door at church. What a joy to see the many types of creatures who have found a home, a nourishing meal, or a safe shelter there! :)
