    Waste Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? Do you know how your compost will be used and the benefits it has on the environment?

Learned all about the business versus residential composting streams in this area. But I still cannot get past putting meats and all the bacteria and all into a composting process. Lots of hangover from my more than 25 years of composting at home for garden use in other places we have lived.

Overall it is the carbon emissions and lack of leadership by those of us capable of demonstrating by doing the most important steps. This does mean getting big money industry interests out of our US elections process. And that is at all levels from school boards that make equipment and construction choices all the way up to the US Congress.

12 DAYS SO FAR _ CAN YOU CATCH ME?
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

The office did such a great job with Recycling Education month it would be hard not to know where things can go. But also I found that many diversion resources I have recommended to projects in the path are based more in the midwest and east coast. SO the "carbon" spent to send things there doesn't make much sense in this region.

Given the impact of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers on both the natural world and our food systems, what do you think about the use of these products in agriculture?

I do not subscribe to the position that they are always and only bad. In order to supply the quantity of food needed for all of our growing populations we must find ways to reduce the negative impacts while increasing crop sustainability and efficiency. The "Organic" farming methods are showing far greater use of land and water in more and more studies than conventional farming. Our world has adapted over time to nearly everything so why would we not look for solutions using all the tools available to us?

What sustainability issues are most pressing or prominent where you live?

Living here in Oregon means lots of environmental issues are being tracked, measured, monitored and also represented in Washington DC. However I do hope we can change the conversation to the actual carbon emitters and not assume that using less electricity means we are a clean population. In fact Oregon still has pretty terrible energy sources (coal...).
