Alicia's actions
Transportation
Car Share
I will sign up for a car-sharing service, or organize car sharing with my neighbors, to cut down on the number of vehicles on the road.
Transportation
Advocate for Greener Vehicles
I will spend at least 10 minutes assessing the vehicles used by my company or college and advocate for a purchasing policy focused on fuel-efficient vehicles.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Health
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.
Nature
Forage for My Food
I will use the 'Learn More' resources below to find where I can forage for my own food locally.
Energy
Online Energy Audit
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Health
Learn More about Food Deserts
I will spend 15 minutes learning about food deserts and find out how I can advocate for healthy and fresh food in my region.
Waste
Launch a Recycling Program
I will start a recycling program at my workplace or school. If a recycling program exists, I will advocate for ways to improve and expand it.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 10-minute walk outside each day.
Transportation
Walk Instead
I will walk 2 mile(s) each day instead of driving and avoid sending up to 2.01 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 30 minute(s) each day.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 20 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.

Alicia Kueper 10/24/2018 5:39 PMI love the SimpleHuman trash/recycle bins, but can’t stomach the price tag! So I’m keeping a close eye on you, Erin Stamm! -

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Advocate for Greener VehiclesReducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?
Alicia Kueper 10/24/2018 12:38 PMI’m going to raise the idea of only renting energy-efficient vehicles (unless a utility van is necessary, etc) for all future business purposes. And also suggest purchasing a carbon footprint offset option for all business related flights! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Advocate For More Food Packaging OptionsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Alicia Kueper 10/24/2018 12:25 PMBut... plastic dog food bags look so much better than paper ones... not to mention it keeps food (pet and human) fresher, longer. But outside of food packaging... I loooove products that choose sustainable labels and packaging substrates. But what really concerns me is that documentary I watched yesterday about cow farts that will kill us all. Meatless Monday’s is not enough, peeps! Try to go meatless/vegan three times a week. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Car ShareTake a moment to think of places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
Alicia Kueper 10/24/2018 12:20 PMWhen I arrived in Naples I shared a taxi with two other Americans rather than taking two separate trips. We all thought we’d die that day due to that guy’s driving and lack of English. -
Alicia Kueper 10/24/2018 12:03 PMAs competitive as I’ve gotten with Erin and Ben in this challenge, it’s really brought my decisions top of mind in all aspects of my life and it’s kind of stressing me out! What are you eating? What are you buying? How did you get to the place where you’re buying it? How are you cooking it? How do you dispose of it? But don’t forget to relax and keep your mental health in check. GAH! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Alicia Kueper 10/24/2018 11:58 AMI’ve been using ziploc bags for sandwiches, pretzels and granola a few times before discarding. I’ve also started to just bring in my ingredients to make my pb&j’s and smoothies to work to eliminate any kind of packaging needed. (And no, using a plastic container for my sandwich doesn’t work well, since my bread tends to dry out when I’ve tried that.) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Support Pollution ReductionWhat environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?
Alicia Kueper 10/24/2018 11:51 AM“HIV is the number 1 cause of death of women of reproductive age globally.” Um. And our government wants to defund organizations like Planned Parenthood, which provides healthcare to women in poverty. Mmmk. -
Alicia Kueper 10/24/2018 11:44 AMNope nope nope Erin Stamm! Watch me research all the recycling possibilities! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Forage for My FoodAmongst the motivations for foraging are: a source of food; means of income; connecting with nature; cultural tradition; or transmitting "local ecological knowledge, and a means for stewarding local and native plant populations" (McLain et al. 2012, 13). Which of these would be your chief motivation and why?
Alicia Kueper 10/23/2018 7:17 PMUsing the map to see where there are native, harvestable plants are locatedwas way cool! I wonder what would happen if we all planted an apple tree in our yards.
