I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Use Reusable Bags

I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Energy

Turn it off

I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 5 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Energy

Adjust the Thermostat

I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.

according to PGE, the power comes from coal, wind, hydro and some solar. Coal is damaging to the environment in a couple ways. 1. the methods used to extract coal from the earth are extremely harmful. Land and mountains are usually stripped (level by level removal of the earth) and watersheds become contaminated. breathing coal dust is extremely hazardous to your health and causes irreversible damage to your body. Burning of coal emits CO2 into the air which contributes to greenhouse effect.

Hydrelectric dams are less damaging to the environment but they still cause problems, mainly with fish populations and then there is the overall impact to the river by blocking the waterways they essentially flood the area upriver. Celilo falls was buried because of a dam which was a complete and total sham for the native american tribes that called Celilo their home and fishing grounds for centuries. Dams can control natural flooding but they also alter the land forever (until they are removed) I do not see The Dalles ever loosing their dam just to bring back Celilo Falls.

I am unsure of how wind farms impact the environment, I have heard stories of flocks of birds flying into the blades and getting killed but other then that I am unsure. They do take up a lot of space but there is still viable land underneath them. Many wind farms are incorporated in actual farms like wheat fields or corn fields.

How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

bring my own "to go box" when dining out. I like to go to a place on SE Powell a couple times a month called "Tecos Fresh Mexican Food" I like them because if you dine in they serve your food on actual dishes instead of Styrofoam or paper. Only problem is there is usually leftovers so instead of wasting them I will bring home, they don't have paper "to go" boxes. They use plastic containers, next time I go I will bring my own food storage container with me.
