James's actions
Energy
Upgrade Heating & Cooling Units
I will replace inefficient heating and cooling units.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of C02 over the course of the next year.
Community
Raise Money For a Nonprofit
I will raise money to support Northwest Earth Institute or another local nonprofit.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Energy
Upgrade My Windows
I will upgrade the windows or weatherstripping in my home or office to reduce air leaks and save on energy costs.
Simplicity
Buy Used Clothes
I will spend 60 minutes learning about the perils of fast fashion and will buy my clothes at second-hand stores when I shop.
Transportation
Learn More and Talk to My Friends
Access to public transportation is a social justice issue! I will learn about the need for public transportation in my community and tell 7 friends each day about the issue.
Energy
Support Resilient Powergrids
A community can be brought to its knees without dependable power, often affecting the most vulnerable. I will write 3 letter(s) or email(s) each day to a public official or company to advocate for a more resilient power grid (e.g. microgrids, solar+storage)
Water
Install a Toilet Tank Bank
I will reduce the amount of water flushed and save up to 11 gallons (41 L) of water each day by installing a toilet tank bank.
Community
Express My Support
I will find out who in my state makes decisions that impact the environment and express my support for more environmental actions.
Health
Avoid refined sugar
I will adopt a diet free of refined sugars, which eliminates sweetened beverages, candy, and processed foods.
Food
Organize a Course
I will organize one of NWEI's discussion courses on food sustainability, 'Menu for the Future' or 'Hungry for Change', with my family, friends, coworkers, or classmates.
Nature
Forage for My Food
I will use the 'Learn More' resources below to find where I can forage for my own food locally.
Water
Insulate Water Pipes and Water Heater
I will avoid wasting water while waiting for the shower or sink to heat up.
Transportation
Advocate for Greener Vehicles
I will spend at least 60 minutes assessing the vehicles used by my company or college and advocate for a purchasing policy focused on fuel-efficient vehicles.

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Buy Used ClothesDo people with economic privilege have a responsibility to consume and own less? How can the concept of "reduce" be presented to those who may be struggling to have enough food, clothes, shelter?
James Lian 10/17/2018 6:12 PMOften those who are struggling are already reducing. There's very little need to tell someone who's on basics to "cut back." It simply dosen't help.
