How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?

Being outdoors, exploring outdoors, even those near me that I haven't yet wandered to, gives me a connectivity to our environment, and through multiple experiences in the outdoors, I have woven together one person's tapestry of sense of place.  It may be easy to talk about different outdoor places, but to be there, to inhale the aroma of the fresh air, to realize oneself, not as an imposition on, but rather as a part of the natural environment, helps me solidify my sense of place.

    Nature Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

I spend a lot of time sitting behind a computer monitor, or in meetings , or on the phone with consultants and Owners.  So I cherish the time I spend outdoors.  Over the years I have developed a interest flowing streams, and take every opportunity I can to get out and explore along their banks.  Yes, I enjoy fly fishing as well, which led to my interests in streams.  Learning about the microcosms of the different streams in different seasons and varying weather events is a lifelong exploration.  For me it is even a spiritual thing.  After each trip, I feel emotionally relaxed, yet recharged for the challenges behind the monitor.  Being out in our natural environment even encourages me to evaluate my priorities.

Father Thomas Berry says, "...our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." Respond to Berry's assertion.

Its fall now.  The mornings are crisp.  What joy there is in waking up when it is still dark, and watching the sun come up, spreading golden hues across the already colorful deciduous trees.  What better way to celebrate the start of a new day?
And the early mornings are still.  One can hear the waking of all that lives.
Tomorrow brings rain, and an end to the exaggerated sunny weather we have been having, but on those days, when the clouds are gone, I will be up again early in the morning.

One said "expect nothing", so that all you experience is beyond nothing, and one can be grateful.  In this age, where deadlines and fast paced electronic working environments are the norm, it is important to remember, in gratitude, all we do have, including our colleagues who put their life into what they do to make things successful for me,and for you, and for all.  Its the seemingly little things that can get passed by, but are no less important to remember.
I am grateful for my lunch today.  For the farmer that grew the rice, and the one who grew the cabbage, and the chicken farmer.  Also the delivery people running their fresh products around the globe to ensure that they are fresh.  And to the workers in the cart who prepared the lunch today, and to all the people who made their systems, and those who keep them running.
Thinking of that keeps a smile on on my face, keeps me centered, and motivates me to the same quality of service that I have been graciously provided.
