In Friday I rode public transit from Hillsboro to SE and NE Portland and back and had a wonderful and quite walk through SE. It was amazing to see all of the fall colors and dogs getting walked. I got stopped by someone from the Nature Conservatory and we had a lovely chat with high fives and hugs. I feel so connected to my community right now and I love it.

I got pretty sick this week so I fell behind in a couple areas but plan on making a comeback! I've been doing great at eating strictly vegetarian and at least half my meals are vegan now. I bring my own fork and spoon at lunch to combat single use plastic.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?

    Lauren Lyda-Priest's avatar
    Lauren Lyda-Priest 10/05/2018 3:07 PM
In North America we have turned a blind eye to how our food is raised and processed. It is quite sickening and the more I learn about the meat and fast food industry the worse I feel. My mom raises her own chickens with gluten free non GMO feed and grows her own food. I get where she is coming from! If we all lived a little bit more like my mom we would be much more sustainable. I have decided to extend this particular challenge of not eating meat into my daily life after the challenge. This really made me think hard about the food we consume.

Items like the Impossible burger are great plant based options for those who love meat. Americans love a good cheese burger and I've tried the Patty and liked it. Mindfulness and mindful eating practices can also curb meat consumsion in America.

Food Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
How does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?

    Lauren Lyda-Priest's avatar
    Lauren Lyda-Priest 10/05/2018 3:01 PM
In America, and because of how we operate here many other parts of the world, we have destroyrd our food system. We can fix it still, but after watching Food Inc I don't think I can eat meat again, unless I know where that animal came from and how it lived it's life nd if it was sourced locally and sustainability.

We have a disconnect from our food and it is hurting everyone, especially the poor. In Portland we have a program called Urban Food Gleaners and they pick up extra food from stores, restaurants, community gardens, local gardeners, farmers, and donations! They redistribute it to those who need it, no questions asked. If more places had programs like these, there would be less food insecurity and less food waste.

What would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?

    Lauren Lyda-Priest's avatar
    Lauren Lyda-Priest 10/04/2018 10:51 PM
I want to reflect more on my career goals and learning about sustainable cities. I would love to be an environmental planner for the city of Portland. Small goals that lead to larger goals are the best course of action. I'm excited for what the future holds.

    Food Whole Foods Diet
Michael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?

    Lauren Lyda-Priest's avatar
    Lauren Lyda-Priest 10/03/2018 6:37 PM
Yes, I would rather pay the farmer, but there are times when you'll want the doctor. Eating healthier does lower your risk of disease, but that doesn't make you immune to everything. I would rather pay my farmer than big corporations, that's for sure.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

    Lauren Lyda-Priest's avatar
    Lauren Lyda-Priest 10/03/2018 6:25 PM
I found an app called iRecycle that lets you type in what sort of item you're looking to recycle and it helps you find the nearest place to take it. I learned that Best Buy will recycle all your random electronics including lithium ion batteries. There is also a company called Terracycle and they recycle everything. Certain places can sponsor a recycling container for a specific thing like film wrap or cigarette butts and when it's full it gets recycled! Recycling is not a forever answer as we need to lower our use for single use products and make a more circular waste system and stop designing things for the dump.

Thank you for this post. I literally have a drawer of empty lotion tubes, shampoo caps, soap pumps, etc. that I've been saving until I could figure out what to do with them (other than send them straight to landfill, that is)! Because of your post I learned that Terracycle has a partnership with Garnier in which they will recycle all those things : )

    Food Join a Local CSA
Dependable fresh food, better prices (cutting out carbon-heavy supply chain and grocery stores), supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these benefits (or others not listed here) inspire you the most?

    Lauren Lyda-Priest's avatar
    Lauren Lyda-Priest 9/28/2018 11:42 PM
Cutting out food waste in general and lowering the carbon footprint of consuming food inspires me. Food is beautiful and nourishing. Why let it go to waste? Why put food into single use packaging before consumption? It's healthy to remember where your food comes from and I try to ask myself that quesiton before each meal.

I like going to Food Front Co-Op in Hillsdale, but it is not as close to me as it used to be. I am currently looking into ACME food boxes that feature local produce including eggs and pasta.
