    Food Reduce Animal Products
What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?

We have fast food restaurants in place of grocery stores in many communities. These restaurants are meatcentric, selling mostly beef. I think the best way is to encourage and educate people to eat less meat, because it is something we can all do. Not everyone wants to become a vegetarian, but it is possible for people to eat less meat and buy organic and local.

I recently stumbled on a way to reduce food waste scraps while looking for recipes the other day, and it's genius!!! Instead of throwing away vegetable ends and pieces you wouldn't normally eat, you save them in a bag and store it in your freezer. Once the bag is totally filled with carrot tops and peels, onion and garlic skins, woody veg ends, put it all in a stock pot with salt and water and make a veggie stock! Brilliant! Already started my collection after making lentil and leek soup tonight, all organic of course!

Took public transit to the closest food co-op. I spent a lot of time observing the types of products they provided and how they were packaged. They have a plethora of bulk items and a wide variety of organic, fair trade coffee. Though this store is out of my way, I plan on making it a part of my weekly/biweekly routine.

Today I went to the 67th Annual Portland Greek Festival. I decided to bring my own fork and I refused plastic containers and single use plates. I opted for the coffee that came in a paper cup, rather than plastic. They were all very small things, especially in contrast to the hundreds of people who likely visited and used all of the single use plastics excessively (i.e. multiple forks, too many napkins, bottled water, etc.). It's scary to imagine the amount of single-use plastics used at a relatively small multi-day event! There needs to be a better solution to this!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

After checking out tips on reducing plastic waste at home, I found one that's perfect for me! I despise using the plastic bags for fruits and veggies at the grocery store. Whenever I don't use one I often get an annoyed look or comment by the grocer weighing and bagging my items. But cotton fruit and veg bags are a thing--duh! I feel silly for not finding out about this simple alternative sooner! I'll be searching for these soon, hopefully at a local shop!

Let me know if you find them. I'd be interested in them, too. I also heard of an alternative to plastic wrap at Trader Joe's. Reusable cloth (I think?) sealers that my friends swear by.

How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

I could make more effort going on urban hikes or adventure to my nearest park with friends. I really enjoy spinning poi and prefer to do it outside, so going to my nearest green space is always ideal! I usually take a walk around my neighborhood once or more times in a day. I also am into photography (as a hobby) and it has gotten me out a lot ever since I bought it! Combining my love for being in the outdoors, learning about plants and my photography hobby have brought great joy to my life.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Choose Organic Ingredients
Can organic farming feed the world? Which side of the argument do you fall on? Why?

    Haley Ogden 10/03/2018 9:28 PM
Organic farming certainly feed the world, as well as improve the health and environment of those around it! Organic farming eliminates the impact of pesticides and fertilizers in our soil and waterways. It encourages biodiversity and interconnections of complex systems, many of which we don't entirely understand, but are continually learning of their importance. And promotes the use of nature to do natures work. Organic farming can feed us, while cleaning up our ecosystems.

    Food Whole Foods Diet
Michael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?

Eating unprocessed, whole foods is definitely better for your health and the environment. Eating whole is a way of minimizing many unseen and external costs to personal, physical and mental health and environmental costs. When you choose processed foods, you are also choosing the production of that product, what it's package in and how it gets to you. Local, whole, organic is the way to eat and shop.

Looking forward to seeing what new habits I can adopt into my life! Today I went organic, vegetarian and zero waste with dinner and it was delicious.
