  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Plant an Herb Garden
Consider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?

I currently grow plants in Mason jars, but have dreams of windowsill gardens. Inside, I feel I have to enclose them more because of the bugs that are found in my older apartment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

I prefer to run with other people (to distract me from the running part) and catch up en route. Hiking is my activity of choice on my weekends, because I miss access to trees and fresh air during the week.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Go by Bike
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

Riding transit gives me an opportunity to people watch, and is more convenient for certain errands. Walking/running/biking really increases your awareness of the city and its infrastructure, while also providing more moments of unexpected joy. I didn't realize how much public art we had!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?

In some ways, burgers and fries have become an integral part of the American identity and experience. We are also always on the go, making fast food really appealing. We can begin shifting this meat-focused food culture by increasing access to fresh produce in food deserts, providing more vegetarian options at restaurants, and reminding people that food should be nourishing and enjoyable, not just eaten out of convenience.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

It surprises me that this figure is so low. I know that I am still figuring out how much to purchase week-to-week and am guilty of throwing away food. I would rather use the money to create a small garden for my patio.

What are other ways you could use the power of the sun to reduce your own environmental footprint?

Heating my apartment naturally in the winter and to grow my own herbs for cooking
