Ashly's actions
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 5 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 10 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Food
Choose Organic Ingredients
I will enjoy 1 meal(s) cooked with organic ingredients each day.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 10 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 4 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper each day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Advocate For More Food Packaging OptionsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Ashly Pinarkyil 10/17/2018 11:43 AMWhat concerns me is that there is clear evidence of what is happening to the Earth, but still there are so many people who either do not believe it or do not care for it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Ashly Pinarkyil 10/10/2018 3:17 PMI can look up articles on how to give purpose to things I have already used. -
Ashly Pinarkyil 10/07/2018 2:56 PMI love saving the earth!!!!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Choose Two-Sided PrintingChoosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?
Ashly Pinarkyil 10/07/2018 2:52 PMThe University can put up signs to promote 2 sided printing! They can also make it an option to make it cheaper if it is double sided printing. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?
Ashly Pinarkyil 10/07/2018 2:45 PMI think plastic water bottles are used a lot more than reusable ones because they are much cheaper and accessible when people are out and about. People need to make sure they have waterbottles on hand, in their cars, and wherever they may travel. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Ashly Pinarkyil 10/07/2018 2:44 PMIt feels great knowing that doing something so small as using a reusable mug can make a huge difference! My roommates and I all share our reusable mugs so that no one has to use plasticware! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Choose Organic IngredientsCan organic farming feed the world? Which side of the argument do you fall on? Why?
Ashly Pinarkyil 10/07/2018 2:40 PMOrganic farming has great potential to feed the world if costs can be lowered for those who may not be able to afford it. -
Ashly Pinarkyil 10/07/2018 2:38 PMMy challenges are going great! Go Green!!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?
Ashly Pinarkyil 10/03/2018 7:59 AMIn addition to changing lightbulbs, I remembered to turn the lights off when I am not using them to be more energy efficient.
