I bike to work and see the same houseless people daily. Today I said hello to one of them as I pulled up to a red light. He said, "Good Morning, thank you for saying hi." It made me want to cry. It is good to acknowledge our fellow human beings and all living things.

good work! i have been gathering good food (some that wont get eaten quickly) from around the house and putting it into little packs. when driving/walking around PDX, I hand out these to homeless people. this helps with the food trash cycle a bit; and hopefully helps the homeless folks. sure wish we had a better solution.

Food Try a New Way to Prep
Canning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?

I read the book, Scraps, Wilts, and Weeds which brought me new ways to use common compost items a little further before going into the compost.

SCRAPS, WILT & WEEDS features 100 recipes by Mads Refslund, one of the initial partners at Noma, the world-renowned Danish restaurant, using local ingredients in a sustainable, no-waste fashion. Using scraps from vegetables, fruits and animal proteins--food that would normally go to waste--Refslund creates beautiful and accessible recipes for the home cook without sacrificing anything to flavor. He uses 100% of the ingredient or as close as possible, including potato peels, cauliflower stems, or fish skins, but also ingredients that are passed over as too young, like green strawberries, or too old, like stale bread, wrinkly potatoes or bolted herbs.

Refslund shares easy-to-follow recipes like: Carrot Tops Pesto, Roasted Cauliflower Stalks with Mushrooms and Brie, Pork Ribs Glazed with Overripe Pear Sauce, Crispy Salmon Skin Puffs with Horseradish-Buttermilk Dip, and Beer and Bread porridge with Salted Caramel Ice Cream. In addition to delicious ingredient-focused recipes, the book contains informational sidebars and stories, insight into the parts of food we often waste, and a section on how to use leftovers, plus 100 beautiful photographs that express Refslund' passion and respect for ingredients, nature and the land.

In your opinion, how do social inequalities diminish a strong sense of community?

    Shawn Postera's avatar
    Shawn Postera 10/22/2018 12:52 PM
If you do not have time to meet your neighbors you miss out on a strong sense of community. Also, if you don't have the $ to go out and socialize with them that will also happen, but what I see in my neighborhood is if you work second or third shift (often times a 2nd job) the individual is not getting to socialize with the rest of us who work a more scheduled day time job. It is unfair for them. Also, who can go to a neighborhood meeting at 6pm if you work second or third shift! That is impossible! Participation is the final word! You cannot participate if you do not have time!!!

    Community Support Native Communities
Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

    Shawn Postera 10/22/2018 12:49 PM
Balance would mean we provide resources for everyone to succeed and ensure that those with the most diparities are receiving resources. Far to long we have taken away resources for the success of indigenous people in the US.  Our beloved Library of Congress still has not changes the subject heading from indian conflict to Native Amercian Genocide. Native American Genocide needs to be a LCSH.

What sustainability issues are most pressing or prominent where you live?

Toxics are on my mind! Air quaility in my neighborhood is not always great living so close to Columbia BLVD, I5, Train Tracks, Industry, and the waste water sewage treatment plant! All of that we live with, but I ahve neighbors who continue to use toxic chemicals and they get up early in the morning to use them in order not make others in the neighborhood upset! Round up on the lawn and wood stripping going on at 5am as I go for my run.

How can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?

Improving bus stops is often times using them! People being around who respect the area helps others appreciate the area as well.

I went to a Sustainability Liaisons meeting! Them I went to PT-physical Therapy. They wanted me to buy stryofoam/polystyrene thing for my exercises. I asked if I could avoid buying this and find a DIY way to do this exercise and they had a solution! So, in the end I didn't have to buy anything! I just had to roll up a beach towel to put under my knees for my PT home exercises! yay!
