I am a librocubicularist. That is, I read in bed. To get my 15 extra minutes of sleep, I must first get to bed on time and then refrain from reading anything too exciting. I am currently enjoying "Astonish Yourself! 101 Experiments in the Philosophy of Everyday Life" by Roger-Pol Droit,  a weird little book with very short chapters that suggests challenges to think about while you drift off.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

Clothing and textiles continue to be challenging to recycle. First choice is to refuse to buy things that do not meet your needs. Better is to buy what you love (new or reused) and wear it to death.  However, I am still looking for a place to recycle things that are essentially only fabric scraps or rags. For usable items, my default is to share with friends first. The GemText boxes seem to be a good way to recycle clean used clothes, shoes, belt, purses, towels and sheets. The boxes are all over and well maintained. I was a little surprised that the animal shelters were not interested in the old towels. A good suggestion I found was to keep one in the car for emergencies :-)

Food Try a New Way to Prep
Canning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?

Hot and heavy into preserving season: tomatoes, eggplants (yes!), figs, apples, herbs, peppers, and pears right now. Already finished plums, beans and squash. I would like to do a better job of preserving Asian greens and elderberries.

How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

Practicing gratitude, and the act of writing it down, helps me sleep better. Expressing genuine thanks and appreciation has improved my relationships with friends, colleagues and customers. I feel that I help make a better world when I recognize other's efforts.

    Health Healthy Sleep
Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?

My workday wakeup time is 4 a.m. My challenge is to get to bed and wake up at about the same time everyday even when there is fun stuff to do at night. Friends know that I "pumpkin" at 8:00 p.m.!
