Finishing last minute challenges - great work everyone!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Improve a Bus Stop
How can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?

    Kristel Renn's avatar
    Kristel Renn 10/24/2018 9:24 AM
The bike paths in Madison are so good, so it's really easy to convince people to use them. Taking time to clean them up after our recent flooding was a great way to connect with people! The bus system needs some work, so I take time to educate people about the bus system, and make suggestions to the city
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Organize a Course
How can you use NWEI programs to help mobilize your community to take action toward a sustainable future?

I love these programs because they are easy to use and spark so many conversations!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
How might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to clean energy?

Trying to change others minds is very difficult, but it's easier when you work along side them. I try to find something personal to connect it to, so they can see their impact and understand the importance of the change!

So important to stay on top of these things! I have loved the daily reminders to think of the earth and make small changes!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Car Share
Take a moment to think of places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

    Kristel Renn's avatar
    Kristel Renn 10/23/2018 8:41 AM
Sharing a vehicle can definitely get challenging, especially during the cold winter months. But a little extra planning makes such a big difference for the environment!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Take Control
How do environmental health, community health, and your personal health intersect?

    Kristel Renn's avatar
    Kristel Renn 10/23/2018 8:41 AM
One of the hardest things is taking care of yourself, but taking time to make an appointment and care for my mental health gives me more time to focus on other sustainability issues!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Carry my Trash
What one thing could you do right away to reduce your waste?

    Kristel Renn's avatar
    Kristel Renn 10/23/2018 8:33 AM
This was so much harder then I expected! One big thing I can do to reduce my waste is avoid single packaging, which will mean making my own protein bars.

One more day, and I don't want this challenge to be over! It's so cool to see the impact every day!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Forage for My Food
Amongst the motivations for foraging are: a source of food; means of income; connecting with nature; cultural tradition; or transmitting "local ecological knowledge, and a means for stewarding local and native plant populations" (McLain et al. 2012, 13). Which of these would be your chief motivation and why?

Foraging is so exciting! You get all this free food you found yourself. I also love urban foraging, or dumpster diving. Knowing you saved all that food from the landfill is so rewarding. Food waste is the third largest contributor to global warming - don't waste food!
