REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Go for a Daily WalkFresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?
Rebecca Roberts 10/24/2018 11:39 AMIf I'm dragging along in the day, a walk re-energizes me. If I am stressed or hyped up, a walk helps to work that out and clears my mind so I can focus. I always feel better after I go for a walk--rain or shine. -

Rebecca Roberts 10/24/2018 11:36 AMLuckily I'm due for my checkup at this time of year, so this one was easy. However, daily self care is not as high a priority as it should be and this was a reminder to do better. I did start going to the gym this month. During the warmer weather months, I prefer to go outside and walk in the woods. -

As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? Do you know how your compost will be used and the benefits it has on the environment?
Rebecca Roberts 10/24/2018 11:32 AMI have collected information from Portland's composting program and am going to work on getting household composting in Clark County. Unfortunately, I won't be able to be regularly active in this pursuit until after the first of the year due to other commitments, but I've started! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Rebecca Roberts 10/24/2018 11:28 AMThis was harder than I thought. I don't use a lot of single use items, so it was hard to say if I just didn't use them that day that I had done the task. If I had the opportunity to use something and I didn't, I counted it. I also realized that what I do use is primarily for snacks--my kids' and mine. I'm looking at changing to whole food snacks that I can put in reusable containers and not snack bars, etc. My kids can't have nuts at school, so my go-to whole food snacks are off the table. Another thing that drives me nuts is fruit and veg packed in plastic! I have started to not buy them if they have packaging and buy them where I can get them without the packaging. It feels good to say, "No, I'm not going to get that. It doesn't support what I believe in." -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Less Screen TimeWhat did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?
Rebecca Roberts 10/17/2018 2:11 PMI wanted to read the books my kids are reading in school so I can talk to them about it. Instead of grabbing my phone, I pick up my book. Not only is this a good lesson for them, but I feel more relaxed and am enjoying it. I've decided when I'm with my kids, they will see me reading a book rather than looking at my phone. Unless I need to look up a recipe or something like that. -
Rebecca Roberts 10/17/2018 2:06 PMOrganized a volunteer event at a conservation site this week. It is a normal thing that I do, so I didn't choose it as an Action. Even after about 10 events, it still feels good every time I do it. :) -

Rebecca Roberts 9/12/2018 12:48 PMTrash is my nemesis. I’m always picking it up. But I want to do more. I want to eliminate it wherever possible and I want to help get municipal composting in areas where it isn’t (which is almost everywhere!). When we had composting, we had very little trash.
