  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Choose LED Bulbs
Changing lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?

I could use less AC and heating, and more blankets or thinner blankets instead when I go to sleep.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Forage for My Food
Amongst the motivations for foraging are: a source of food; means of income; connecting with nature; cultural tradition; or transmitting "local ecological knowledge, and a means for stewarding local and native plant populations" (McLain et al. 2012, 13). Which of these would be your chief motivation and why?

    Sofia Rutman 10/18/2018 9:37 PM
Probably a source of food. All of the things are important, but it is extremely important to have enough food. If you don't, you can get sick or starve to death, and it is unhealthy. So it is a good idea to learn where you can find your own food just in case you ever need to.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Buy From a Farmers Market
What is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?

    Sofia Rutman's avatar
    Sofia Rutman 10/04/2018 8:08 PM
Buying from local organic producers helps them stay in business, doesn't support huge international chains that are horrible, and provides you with a good meal!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

    Sofia Rutman's avatar
    Sofia Rutman 10/04/2018 8:06 PM
Playing team sports is a good way to spend time with friends while exercising, and cross country is good if you want to run in nature. I like to play soccer and basketball.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Meet My Local Farmers
When you know who produces your food, you are connecting personally to your complex regional food system. What are the advantages of knowing who produces your food and where it comes from? Do you think this might enable someone to advocate for a better quality of life for those who produce their food, both near and far?

    Sofia Rutman's avatar
    Sofia Rutman 10/03/2018 9:52 PM
You can know if it's what you want, if the plants are being sprayed with weedkillers or not, how animals are treated, and also you are supporting local farmers so you don't get old food that is shipped from places which produces more CO2 and CO.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health More Fruits and Veggies
What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How can we start shifting from a meat-focused food culture to a more plant-based one?

    Sofia Rutman's avatar
    Sofia Rutman 10/02/2018 9:01 PM
Meat eating costs us a ton of Co2 and kills animals and isn't as healthy as eating less meat. Meat is good for protein, but we are omnivores and shouldn't exist on only meat.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health Learn More about Food Deserts
What are the implications of access to nutritious food for a community?

    Sofia Rutman's avatar
    Sofia Rutman 10/02/2018 8:59 PM
So it turns out that sometimes people can't access fresh food. That would probably be really bad for you because you aren't even eating food the way nature intended and your body is built for. Everyone should be grateful that we can eat fresh food and do so.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Healthy Sleep
Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?

    Sofia Rutman's avatar
    Sofia Rutman 10/02/2018 8:57 PM
Most of us don't get enough sleep, and we say it's because we have to go to school and get up early and stuff, but that means that we should just go to bed earlier. That seems to work well.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Happiness
How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

    Sofia Rutman's avatar
    Sofia Rutman 10/02/2018 8:54 PM
It's nice how just doing one thing can help your brain and body be more happy.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Adjust the Thermostat
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your zipcode, and in your state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

    Sofia Rutman's avatar
    Sofia Rutman 10/02/2018 7:44 PM
    How to reduce energy usage:
    Add solar panels to roof
Turn off lights when not using them
    Take shorter showers
