REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?
Mollie Shannon 10/24/2018 5:18 PMI think our society is so used to giving people bags and making everything as "convenient" as possible, but it is really not that hard to a) bring your own bags or b) decline a bag if you only have a few items. I already do try to bring my own bags with me but this challenge helped to keep it front of mind. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Launch a Recycling ProgramHow might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems differently?
Mollie Shannon 10/24/2018 5:09 PMMy office already had recycling bins but they were not being use properly. I would see people throwing trash in the recycling and worse, recycling in the trash. I started slow and was able to make signs to put by each receptacle and will continue to educate coworkers about the simple changes they can make. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Mollie Shannon 10/24/2018 5:05 PMI found this challenge actually pretty easy. Especially for breakfast, there are so many meatless options. It was also fun to be able to try new recipes and also just remove meat from current recipes. Hot tip: vegetarian enchiladas are delicious. It is nice to know there is something I can do to help the environment, without going full vegetarian. It is easy to replace meals and choose the veggie options without feeling like you're missing out on flavor. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Mollie Shannon 10/18/2018 12:29 PMThis was a very helpful exercise. I actually learned that a lot of materials I thought couldn't be recycled in my curbside can could. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Mollie Shannon 10/03/2018 7:27 PMIt helps you stay grounded. When you are being consciously thankful it helps you appreciate all the food and things you have. 1. It makes you want for less because you realize you don't need to buy so much and can live with less. 2. A lot of what I was appreciating was nature and the environment and it just makes me more driven to do my part and help others reduce, reuse, recycle.
