Melissa's actions

Food

Reduce Animal Products

I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Health

More Fruits and Veggies

I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 2 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Recycle Everything I Can

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 20 minutes researching and recycling all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Health

Happiness

I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.

    Waste Recycle Everything I Can
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

my county has recently dropped glass from the typical recycling pickup. I will now bring glass to a specific drop point by our police station
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

repair is a very under used item in reducing waste the things we used don't need to be perfect to function and we need to think on how to fix what we already have and make it functional

    Health More Fruits and Veggies
What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How can we start shifting from a meat-focused food culture to a more plant-based one?

One thing that is interesting that i see is that young children favor fruits and veggies over meat when being introduced to their first foods. Some time in the process of moving from soft foods into solids many vegetables fall out of daily meals because they are more difficult for babies to chew and swallow than breads. I think we need more focus on holding vegetables up as the main staple of children's diets as they grow so they aren't replaced with more processed options and meats

We do have a culture based around meet consumption going back to the idea of America as a "land of plenty" our "food pyramid" and "four food groups" had us growing up with meat represented as a crucial part of the diet. We need more focus on plant based proteins as good sources of full nutrition
