Michael's actions

Energy

Choose Clean/Renewable Energy

I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health

Avoid refined sugar

I will adopt a diet free of refined sugars, which eliminates sweetened beverages, candy, and processed foods.

COMPLETED 6
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Compost Food Waste

I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.

Today we sorted waste and recycled a whole bunch that was WRONGLY going to the landfill!

Life really got in the way of this challenge, but having it in my head the entire month really made an effect on what I noticed could be changed.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? Do you know how your compost will be used and the benefits it has on the environment?

When we compost, I notice that we basically have no trash whatsoever!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Avoid refined sugar
Before you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?

The only way I can stay away from refined sugar is by not buying it. I lived for month without processed sugar, but then I went to Germany a few years ago and it destroyed my diet. I feel healthier when I don't eat processed sugar.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
How might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to clean energy?

A big part of the energy program is that people are able to save money at certain times. In order to influence people to make the shift, I have to know more and more about how much money people can save by my own experience.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I have all the supplies to reduce my plastic use to 0, but I forget a bunch so this challenge has just become a challenge to be more conscious.
