It's amazing how much junk mail and how many catalogs I get. Pretty soon this will kick into high season, with the holidays (read: high spending) approaching. I am very grateful for the new habit of not letting paper waste accumulate so much, but separating it daily and taking it to the recycle bin. (Older piles to clean up still, though.)

As I clean up, I notice that the vast majority is RECYCLABLE material suitable for PAPER processing, probably 60-70% (newspapers - yes, I'm old-fashioned. Magazines, catalogs, etc. I like print!). Consumer packaging, too.

Something I already did was to replace my front and back lawns with drought-tolerant landscaping. Drip irrigation keeps the native species and succulents going; there is also rockscaping to simulate riverbeds. There is a patch of iceplant in the backyard that I want to replace, though, and a lot of other projects yet to be done.

I always used to hear about "Navy" showers, especially in previous droughts in southern California. Turn on the tap long enough to get wet, then turn it off and soap up. Turn it on again but only long enough to rinse off. Then you're done!

Just doing this a few days has caused me to start considering my purchases more carefully. Usually I am very impulsive, but now I can see the downside of ending up with too much. It becomes a burden. I still have a lot to give away. It will feel good.

How can you prevent yourself from accumulating more things in the future?

I am donating clothing I have literally not worn for years to veterans' organizations. Same for boxes of household goods I have moved from place to place and never unpacked. Letting go is actually easier than anticipated. It's like being able to take deep breaths for the first time in a long time.

The challenges that are most appealing to me are in the SIMPLICITY category. That must mean something.

    Water 5-Minute Showers
Five minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?

I learned from a friend to cool the water down too. Brrrr! But good for you.
