Cindy's actions

Health

Exercise Daily

Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 20 minute(s) each day.

COMPLETED 10
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Meet My Local Farmers

I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those who produce my food in other regions of the world to make better choices when I shop.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Use a Reusable Mug

I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.

COMPLETED 14
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Use a Reusable Water Bottle

I will keep 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.

COMPLETED 14
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

COMPLETED 14
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

DAILY ACTIONS

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Maybe the one thing I focused on this time was using reusable containers rather than plastic bags. One of my students watched a video about the extent of plastic trash in the ocean and the extent of danger to wildlife. That was a wake-up call! It's easier now to avoid single-use containers.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

I drink hot tea, and I must have a dedicated reusable travel cup because I can't stand the smell of coffee in my tea cup!

I forget to check in every day, so thanks for the reminder. We've developed good eco-habits as a family. We appreciate the other tips found here.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Cindy Ulshafer 10/19/2018 9:49 PM
Definitely I reuse items, especially my own water bottle with its own reusable straw, vegetable bags that I use twice, reusable tea mugs, reusable grocery bags, and using fabric mesh bags for buying vegetables in place of more plastic bags.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

The very best I've found is walking with my husband and talking about the day! It helps the whole day go better.

For years, we as a family have been recyclers of metal, plastic, paper, and glass. But when I started reading some of the other ways I could help the environment, I wanted to learn concrete steps that we could fit into our lifestyles...and even make a change in our lifestyles.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Meet My Local Farmers
When you know who produces your food, you are connecting personally to your complex regional food system. What are the advantages of knowing who produces your food and where it comes from? Do you think this might enable someone to advocate for a better quality of life for those who produce their food, both near and far?

I love supporting community supported agriculture. By doing this, we eat so much healthier and are able to share recipes I've used with my family and a couple of friends who have asked.

The recycling standards have changed, so I have typed up a recycling doc for our neighbors and will share it this weekend with them.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?

When I have too many reusable bottles (and often they are free as a promotion), I can stop and think! I will refuse it or pass it on to someone else who needs one.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

I can turn off the shower while I am lathering up when I am shampooing my hair.
