Usually I do something creative. Sewing is good. So is knitting or spinning.

An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

That number is a bit surprising. Personally, I would rather use the money to save, or to go on vacation.

How might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems differently?

I think corporations have community responsibility to provide better options. For example, we know straws are bad for the environment. Starbucks has begun to provide options to straws. We as the community asked for that, but they stepped up. This needs to happen more often. We need to develop a sense of 'community responsibility' within the corporate community, and move away from the 'grab mine and screw next quarter' mentality that we have now. Not sure how we're going to do this in the Trumpanzee culture we have now, but it has to change.

"Insect pollinators include bees, (honey bees, solitary species, bumblebees); pollen wasps (Masarinae); ants; flies including bee flies, hoverflies and mosquitoes; lepidopterans, both butterflies and moths; and flower beetles."
I'm making a plan to plant more perennials and annuals that feed pollinators. It's a great excuse to go to Portland Nursery. :)

As a lover of antiques, interesting or beautiful items, and things with either history or potential, I thought this article about human relationships with their things very interesting. https://www.ft.com/content/80b72e22-5ee5-11e6-bb77-a121aa8abd95

Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

Abundance rides on the wings of bees.

Nearly half of our food depends on pollinators.

How do you deal with the physical and emotional stress of the big problems we face? How can you help others cope?

Dealing with stress. That's a tough one. I create things mostly. I knit, sew, quilt, spin wool into yarn. Repetitive creativity (like knitting) tends to be very soothing. I also have to have alone time to decompress. Exercise helps too.

Michael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?

    Leigh Wheeler's avatar
    Leigh Wheeler 10/16/2018 9:14 AM
I totally agree. You may not avoid the doctor completely, but so many problems are avoided by eating right and exercising. The challenge is to do it!

The only thing good about Mondays is that it is the shiny new start to a week. Resolutions can be re-committed, and new habits started again.
