COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Transportation

Work from Home

I will work from home 2 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.

COMPLETED

COMPLETED 20
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Join a Local CSA

I will sign up for a local CSA (Community-Supported Agriculture).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 5 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

COMPLETED 20
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

COMPLETED 20
DAILY ACTIONS

Weekly Meal Planning

I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

That is crazy to think how much food we waste! I know I can do better at not wasting food like that. I could use that money to put towards a vacation or use to buy food from local farmers to help support them.

How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?

    Nick Wleklinski 10/11/2018 9:41 PM
I enjoy talking walks/city hikes around the area and surrounding areas to get a better idea of what is all out there. Doing this has given me a greater appreciation of where I live and motivates me to get outdoors!

What most interested or surprised you about your own energy footprint?

How much of a difference my energy usage is during the hot summer months vs the cooler months
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Nick Wleklinski 10/10/2018 3:42 PM
I will make it more of a point to bring my own coffee mug to Starbucks when I get my morning joe from there.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

    Nick Wleklinski 10/10/2018 3:40 PM
I have made it a point to stop using plastic water bottles and stick to a single water bottle. Sure, it is more of a hassle to keep it clean and keeps tabs on it so I don't lose it, but it has help cut down on my carbon footprint!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Adjust the Thermostat
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your zipcode, and in your state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

Ensuring we have LED light bulbs installed, not leaving the TV on when not watching it, and turning off my desktop when not in use. I will also pay closer attention to my monthly energy usage and see how it compares to others in my area.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Join a Local CSA
Dependable fresh food, better prices (cutting out carbon-heavy supply chain and grocery stores), supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these benefits (or others not listed here) inspire you the most?

What is most important to me is cutting down on the carbon heavy supply chain and helping support local farmers.
