Kara's actions
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Health
Avoid refined sugar
I will adopt a diet free of refined sugars, which eliminates sweetened beverages, candy, and processed foods.
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or some other small improvement.
Water
Install a Low-Flow Showerhead
I will save up to 15 gallons (56 L) of water a day by installing a low-flow showerhead.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 15-minute walk outside each day.
Transportation
Use Public Transit
I will use public transit 5 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to 2.28 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Use Public TransitThe US spends roughly 20% of its federal budget on defense. In contrast, 2% goes to education, 20% goes to social security and 3% goes to transportation infrastructure. Do these numbers surprise you at all? Why or why not?
Kara Kindt 10/24/2018 9:40 AMWhile these numbers don't necessarily surprise me, I do think that the US could allocate their funds in a way that better supports the public. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Buy From a Farmers MarketWhat is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?
Kara Kindt 10/24/2018 9:38 AMPurchasing less meat and local ingredients would do more good and less harm -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Improve a Bus StopHow can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Avoid refined sugarBefore you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?
Kara Kindt 10/12/2018 12:06 PMI didn't eat a lot of refined sugar before, so I wouldn't say I was addicted. Removing what I did eat wasn't hard. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Install a Low-Flow ShowerheadHow can your region/household prepare for changing water situations in order to become more resilient?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Kara Kindt 10/04/2018 9:39 AMThe amount of food waste in the US is pretty out of control. If I saved $1,500 a year it would probably go toward vacations. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Power Down the ComputerWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
