Lucas's actions
Water
Ditch the Lawn
I will replace my lawn with a drought-tolerant landscape and save the water, money, and time I used to spend cutting the grass.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Water
Install a Low-Flow Showerhead
I will save up to 15 gallons (56 L) of water a day by installing a low-flow showerhead.
Health
Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my Home
I will spend 20 minutes researching toxic chemicals found in cleaning supplies and personal care products and remove them from my home.
Health
Take Control
Both system and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.
Nature
Forage for My Food
I will use the 'Learn More' resources below to find where I can forage for my own food locally.
Waste
Recycle Everything I Can
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 15 minutes researching and recycling all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Energy
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Health
Avoid refined sugar
I will adopt a diet free of refined sugars, which eliminates sweetened beverages, candy, and processed foods.
Health
Eliminate Toxic Plastics
I will avoid buying toxic plastics - including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl - and instead replace them with bioplastic or durable options.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Food
Zero-Waste Cooking
I will cook 1 meal(s) with zero-waste each day
Transportation
Walk Instead
I will walk 2 mile(s) each day instead of driving and avoid sending up to 3.01 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Ditch the LawnWhat is the main water source in your region?
Lucas Raab 10/24/2018 3:13 PMThis challenge stemmed mostly from laziness and not wanting to water/cut grass. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Buy From a Farmers MarketWhat is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?
Lucas Raab 10/24/2018 3:10 PMFarmer markets are great, this was an easy challenge that I choose to complete most Saturdays. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Forage for My FoodAmongst the motivations for foraging are: a source of food; means of income; connecting with nature; cultural tradition; or transmitting "local ecological knowledge, and a means for stewarding local and native plant populations" (McLain et al. 2012, 13). Which of these would be your chief motivation and why?
Lucas Raab 10/24/2018 3:07 PMThis was a pretty interesting challenge. It involved me going out to Mt Hood national forest for a weekend with some friends. Mostly berries and fish were foraged for dinner that night. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Walk InsteadHalf of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Do you feel that this fact applies to you? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?
Lucas Raab 10/02/2018 5:45 PMThe biggest hurtle to walking in my life is the time it takes to get there. Allowing myself more time will allow me to walk more often and further. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Eliminate Toxic PlasticsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Lucas Raab 10/02/2018 5:42 PMStraws are the most common single use plastics that I use day to day. Luckily it is becoming increasingly easy to find paper straws, or avoid them all together. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Choose Clean/Renewable EnergyHow might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to clean energy?
Lucas Raab 10/02/2018 5:41 PMPGE offers a great clean energy program that has only a small affect on my utility bill. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Avoid refined sugarBefore you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?
Lucas Raab 10/02/2018 5:38 PMIt becomes increasingly hard to avoid refined sugars, I find it in almost every food I eat. shockingly many types of fruit have also been selectively bred to increase the sweetness, usually resulting in higher amounts of sugar per fruit. This will be a difficult one.
