Andre's actions
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 10 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, their causes, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Food
Zero-Waste Cooking
I will cook 3 meal(s) with zero-waste each day
Waste
Carry my Trash
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper each day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?
Andre Singer 11/08/2018 9:36 AMI can use metal re-usable water bottles in order to reduce the use of plastic water bottles, and therefore reduce the amount of contamination from them in the environment. -
Andre Singer 11/08/2018 9:26 AMMy challenges went well. I made sure that I remembered, and was committed to following the parameters of each challenge that I had to complete. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Learn About Local Environmental Justice ConcernsWho is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Andre Singer 11/08/2018 9:23 AMIn a community setting, animals and other organisms that live in nearby ecosystems are affected by environmental irresponsibility in my community. If waste, for example, is mishandled, it can contaminate nearby ecosystems. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Zero-Waste CookingIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?
Andre Singer 10/24/2018 1:08 PMWhile I am in a college setting and don't cook my own food, I can make sure that what every I put on my plate for each meal, I am finishing completely and not leaving any to waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Andre Singer 10/24/2018 12:58 PMI could incorporate the "Rs" into my lifestyle by reducing the amount of items I throw out, re-using items, such as bottles, and reducing the amount of plastic that I use in my life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Carry my TrashWhat one thing could you do right away to reduce your waste?
Andre Singer 10/24/2018 12:54 PMI can reduce my waste by taking close notice of what I throw out. For example, sometimes I throw out paper when there is a whole blank side on the back that I can use instead of throwing it in the garbage. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Choose Two-Sided PrintingChoosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?
Andre Singer 10/24/2018 12:51 PMI can help others make this switch by spreading the idea that printing on both sides of the paper reduces the amount of paper used. When I am printing something with a friend or classmate, I can encourage he/she to do double sided printing. I think it is important that double sided printing is encouraged across all companies. The impact it would have on the amount of paper used would be significant. -
Andre Singer 10/24/2018 12:42 PMIt is important to eliminate as much plastic from the environment as possible. Therefore, I use metal reusable water bottles to help this cause.
