Julia's actions
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Simplicity
Meditate
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 20 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 15-minute walk outside each day.
Food
Plant an Herb Garden
I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 2 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Transportation
Car Share
I will sign up for a car-sharing service, or organize car sharing with my neighbors, to cut down on the number of vehicles on the road.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by opting into paperless billing and ending unwanted subscriptions.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Health
Know My health
I will get my Core Four Biometrics tests (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and BMI).
Community
Express My Support
I will find out who in my state makes decisions that impact the environment and express my support for more environmental actions.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Energy
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Choose Clean/Renewable EnergyHow might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to clean energy?
Julia Albano 10/24/2018 7:35 PMI can talk to friends and neighbors about the process. I just signed up on PGE's website https://www.portlandgeneral.com/newsletters/customer-news/2018-09/2018-09-lets-shrink-oregons-carbon-footprint
SUPER easy to do! -
Julia Albano 10/24/2018 1:37 PMFinal day! Not only did I eat pretty healthy these past few weeks, but I became much more aware of how much waste I produce, how many straws I can turn down and how I need to keep up on my meditation! -
Julia Albano 10/23/2018 5:58 PMJenna and I spent 2 hours walking around Seattle today, definitely accomplished my 15 min minimum! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Try a New Way to PrepCanning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?
Julia Albano 10/23/2018 5:56 PMWell thanks to Jenna I've been educated on all things canning and pickling! Our garden has an abundance of peppers so we pickled those and look forward to enjoying all year. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Express My SupportWhat sustainability issues are most pressing or prominent where you live?

Julia Albano 10/21/2018 1:23 PMWe brought food in Friday night, the packaging was almost all of our waste for the entire week. The audit really has me thinking about cooking from home more! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Julia Albano 10/20/2018 11:46 AMI know I’m desensitized to the amount of waste I’m actually responsible for. Im collecting my trash through the weekend and am already surprised by how much there is. I already compost but food packaging really adds up. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Know My healthHow do you deal with the physical and emotional stress of the big problems we face? How can you help others cope?
Julia Albano 10/20/2018 11:20 AMRediscovering meditation during this challenge has helped. Also I’m an animal lover so when the world gets overwhelming i spend some time with my dogs and it tends to put things into perspective. I have some goofy labs so it’s hard to not be happy around them! -
Julia Albano 10/20/2018 11:18 AMMy ND suggested a Boston Heart panel which gives even more info than just the 4 core metrics. Lots of info, super interesting but VERY expensive. Luckily it was covered by insurance. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Go get a check upHow do you practice self care?
Julia Albano 10/20/2018 11:08 AMI try to have one weekend day with nothing planned. On weeks that i travel it’s so helpful to get extra sleep, relax and enjoy time with loved ones for that one day.
