Omaha, NE recently had a huge snow storm come through last Sunday. Since the trees are still full of leaves, the heavy snow fall caused damage to trees. This caused many fallen limbs and broken branches. A great way to recycle these branches is to bring them to the Henry-Doorly Zoo here where animals can have them as enrichment and browse.

Omaha, NE has become a test marker for the Hefty orange bag recycling program. Through this program, I am able to buy special orange trash bags that can be used to recycle soft plastics, Styrofoam, and misc. plastic materials (tooth paste tubes, candy wrappers, chip bags, etc.). This will be collected for recycling along with other recyclable waste. Since my husband and I have started to do this, we have seen a tremendous decrease in the amount of actual trash we take out. Now we have 3+ bags of recycling a week and 1 bag of trash every other week. What a difference this can make. I hope this program can be continued worldwide!

I've been practicing the 3 R's (reduce, reuse, recycle) my whole life, but I still felt like I could be doing more. Through UNMC, I have learned about the LiveGreen program and I have joined to become an ambassador. I did this to continue my education with sustainability practices at work and at home. I believe this will also help me to educate others as well.
