    Waste Personal Waste Audit
Why is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?

The reason, I think, that it’s difficult to understand the impact of our waste is that we’re often not mindful of what we’re wasting and how to combat it. What I like about the straw ban is that it’s make people aware of their waste and alternatives to wasting (what I don’t like is how it hurts people with disabilities, but that’s a different topic for a different time). With straws, people are becoming more aware and mindful of the impact of their waste, and I think that’s a message worth spreading.

    This week I collected...

       - 7 fun-sized candy wrappers
       - 5 produce stickers
       - 1 crackers to-go wrapper
       - 1 string cheese wrapper
       - 2 plastic food packaging safety seals
       - 1 plastic tortilla package
       - 1 twist tie

Literally everything I threw away had to do with food packaging.

A few things I'm surprised to find in my trash jar:
    • the stickers that go on produce at the grocery store
    • the shipping labels on my recyclable package  in the mail
    • an empty pen ink refill
To explain the last one, I've been reusing my pens by buying ink refills to avoid throwing away a whole pen each time, and even though it's less waste than a whole pen, I sometimes forget that it's still waste. Something to think about.

What one thing could you do right away to reduce your waste?

At the moment, the only waste I've produced is one granola bar wrapper.

If I wanted to go hard-core, I could find a grocery store that sells grains and granola in bulk and bake my own granola bars waste-free.

Or, if I wanted to take a more convenient route, I could swap out the packaged granola bar for an apple.

    So the challenge begins!

I'm actually looking forward to it. I've been attempting a mini garden in my apartment (without much success), so I've had my eye on an herb garden for a while. I'm planning to grow cilantro, since it's the herb I eat the most and waste the most, since I can never finish a full bundle from the grocery store.

I don't expect the herb garden to be too much of a challenge, since it's not all that far out of my usual routine. The real challenge will be collecting all my non-recyclable waste. I'm interested in seeing where most of my waste comes from, and how I can best reduce it in the future.
