QUESTION
Transportation
Reducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?
Reducing Oil Dependence. We are organic farmers/ chefs...and Slow Food members --this is how we promote our values. If we are what we eat.. are we also what we drive? For many of us on tiny budgets -- we need a bumper sticker indicating that we are inspired and motivated to drive a fuel-efficient vehicle and plan to do so when funds are available. Hopefully, we will see more government tax incentives or programs to make this possible; good, clean, and fair fuel-efficient choices for all! Not so easy to bike in the rural wild.
Half of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Do you feel that this fact applies to you? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?
I live and work on a 76-acre sustainable farm. We use a "Gator" off road vehicle to transport plants and materials and check the site out of necessity (hot and humid climate lots of ticks). No public transportation in our community.
However, it now October and I can take the time to walk the farm and carry the tools, plants, and materials --- enjoying the cooler weather. My message, we can still do what we can to make a difference regardless of our challenges.
My challenge is going well. I run an organic farm, yoga retreat, and tearoom (all on my farm) -- because I am in a rural area in the historic Ozark Highlands ....we are technically challenged -- thus checking in takes time. We love this program and think it is an excellent tool... and it helps us measure how we are doing. The resources are excellent. Thank you.
We have a tiny building with a three compartment sink where we wash all of the produce that we harvest --and also a high tunnel with a three compartment sink. We put in systems featured in the video to drain the water into raised beds.
Yes. Enhancing sacred spaces outdoors is what I do for a living. Each day, I am engaged in these activities to enhance a Sense of Place; Prairie Restoration, Wild Edible Permaculture Design, Botanical Sanctuary with United Plant Savers Medical Herb Preservation, Shinrin Yoku Trails, and maintenance of or on-site natural rivers and banks. We created a Sacred Monarch Labyrinth to promote Monarch Preservation efforts.
Canning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?
Aunt Molly's Ground Cherry is on a preservation list, we dry them on raw setting in our dehydrator for enjoyment - and to add to a Slow Food Chef Alliance Menu.
We are a Zero Waste Restaurant " Botanical Tea Room" on 76-acre sustainable farm. We are a Botanical Sanctuary preserving valuable medicinal and culinary plants, and we are a State Partner for pollinator habitat. And, a yoga retreat. We teach "Regenerative Agriculture: Mindful Eating".
