Margaret's actions
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Health
Learn More about Food Deserts
I will spend 30 minutes learning about food deserts and find out how I can advocate for healthy and fresh food in my region.
Health
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?
Margaret Bean 10/03/2018 9:27 AMI don't drink much water, but when I do, it's usually sparkling, made with my Soda Stream (I've had it over 10 years), and in my ever-present Contigo mug.-
Anthony Theil 10/03/2018 10:18 AMI need to check-out Soda Stream. Buying cases of seltzer creates waste and is a heavy load.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Margaret Bean 10/03/2018 9:26 AMI never use single-use coffee cups, nor even ceramic mugs. My coffee (tea) cools down too fast with those. Instead, my Contigo mug is ever-present with me, and I sip my coffee/tea over several hours. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Margaret Bean 10/03/2018 9:25 AMWith regard to beverages, my contigo mugs are with me at all times!
When I make a smoothie, depending on how thick it is, I use either a stainless steel thin straw to drink it, or a thick washable plastic straw. I've had these straws for several years now. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? Do you know how your compost will be used and the benefits it has on the environment?
Margaret Bean 10/03/2018 9:23 AMIt's taking a long time to fill 1/2 of my dual-chamber compost bin! Even though I add a lot of shredded paper and cardboard to balance out carbon-to-hydrogen, it's still very juicy! -
Margaret Bean 10/02/2018 8:36 AMFun to see there are a lot of things I already do.
