Charlotte's Actions
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 60 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Health
Eliminate Toxic Plastics
I will avoid buying toxic plastics - including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl - and instead replace them with bioplastic or durable options.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 20 minute(s) each day.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.

Charlotte Becker 10/24/2018 10:00 PMPCC is awesome. The school gave me my first chance at higher ed. I will always be grateful! I chose the challenges I did because I need to focus on everyday ways to make a difference for the environment. Everyone can make a difference! Thank you all for being part of the solution. -
Charlotte Becker 10/24/2018 9:55 PMSo glad I could help the PCC team. I am an alum. PCC was my first college experience when I was 31. I still love PCC! Hope the team makes it to the top in the stats! -
Reflection QuestionNature Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Charlotte Becker 10/24/2018 9:50 PMI wasn't able to complete this; however I did accomplish 1 task I was putting off...I cleaned the stone pillars at the entrance to our subdivisionthat and reset one of the stones in the facade that had fallen off in preparation for the installation of a new sign. This was a real challenge for me, and I did get a couple hours of exercise scrubbing the stones. My shoulders still hurt! Ugh. -
Reflection QuestionHealth Eliminate Toxic PlasticsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Charlotte Becker 10/24/2018 9:39 PMSkipped the bottled water at the grocery and am buying beverages in glass and aluminum cans. Stuff tastes better in glass and it's recyclable. Portland has its own glass plant. -
Reflection QuestionWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Charlotte Becker 10/21/2018 4:05 PMWhile not able to reduce the plastic containers my cousin insisted on buying in Washington state, I did bring the containers back to Oregon where they can be returned for recycling. In Phoenix, Arizona, many people drink bottled water, because the local water tastes bad. This contributes to single-use plastics in the waste stream. When people visit Oregon from a state where bottles and cans are not redeemed, they often toss them in the trash. It's frustrating, but carrying the bottles to a place where they can be recycled makes more sense. -
Reflection QuestionHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Charlotte Becker 10/21/2018 3:59 PMHeard a great speaker, who was disabled by polio since before his first birthday. He has done many great things in life, including serving in cabinet positions for 3 Presidents. Made me able to look at some of my own difficulties and gave me incentive to accept the problems, while working to improve my community. -
Reflection QuestionHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Charlotte Becker 10/21/2018 3:55 PMConnected with my cousin from Arizona and raked leaves for my 92 y/o aunt in Walla Walla for 2 hours. Had a great talk about growing up.
